About POP: Methodology Experiment One

POP: Methodology Experiment One is an experimental game by Rob Lach which dissects the impact of reinterpreting the typical game development process and following a self-prescribed dogma to its creative conclusion. POP takes you on a visual and emotional roller-coaster, throwing at you a series of disjointed interactive vignettes of ranging purpose, visual style, and frustration.

Deluxe Edition Includes

  • Game of the Saeculum Edition DLC
  • Official Soundtrack

Game of the Saeculum Edition Includes

  • Developer Commentary where Rob Lach whispers secrets into your ear and desperately tries to fit a commentary 3x as long as the actual game
  • Game Mode Switches Including modes like 66.6 which allows you to play the game at 66.6% speed and Huetrip making everything continuously shift colors.

Methodology Experiment #1

POP:ME1 was designed music first, with the game mechanics, visual aesthetic, and overall structure derived from the creative flow of the music production process. As Rob created each song, he imagined a game that would go along with it, tapping into the emotional energy of the music he was creating, documenting his concepts, and executing the ideas with minimal iteration. What emerged is a series of interactive vignettes, disjointed, taking the player on an intimidatingly intense and equally indecipherable journey of frustration and wonder.

IDK how to do this review justice without being a ♥♥♥♥, but I'm gonna try. Play this game as intended. Once. Experience it, let it make you curious and confused and most likely angry. If you're in gamedev or a gamedev-adjacent field, you might walk away with some new ideas. And then let it go. To play this for any other reason... completionism, scoreboard climbing, etc. is to court all that is rough and uncomfortable about the experience. It is to answer exactly those questions posed by the opening thesis, "why not?" Keep it experimental.

POP: Methodology Experiment One is an unapologetically experimental indie title that exists far outside the boundaries of conventional game design, created and published by Rob Lach under the Rob Lach Games label. Rather than following familiar structures such as levels, objectives, or narrative arcs, the game presents itself as a collection of interactive experiments driven first and foremost by music. The soundtrack was composed before the gameplay was even conceptualized, and everything that follows—visuals, mechanics, pacing, and tone—is built to orbit that musical core. As a result, the experience feels less like a traditional game and more like a digital art piece, one that asks players to engage with rhythm, sensation, and emotional impulse rather than mastery or progression. From the opening moments, it becomes clear that POP is not interested in easing players into its world. Each segment feels deliberately unpredictable, often shifting style, mechanics, and presentation without warning. One moment you may be interacting with a fast-paced arcade-like challenge, the next drifting through an abstract visual space where the primary interaction is movement synchronized to sou…
