"POPPIN' DONUTS" is a student project from the Vantan Game Academy in Japan. It's a very simple 2.5D platformer where you jump around platformer levels made out of gigantic desserts and confectionary. Okay then. There's no English translation for the game, but that's okay, it's a platformer, you can work it out quickly. The graphics in this game are passable, but could be better. And while it's vital for any game to have impressive visuals (gaming is a visual medium, after all), there's more to a game than just the graphics. To be worth a gamers time, the game must match top tier visuals with top tier gameplay, and that's not happening here. Not every "free" game really is. There's often MTX, or content locked behind DLC, or donations being requested, or any other number of things that could mislead gamers, but in this case I'm glad to say this really does appear to be a fully free game. Nothing demonstrates a developers belief in themselves and their work than giving it away without any remuneration. This is a service to themselves, and the gaming industry, and should be applauded. POPPIN’ DONUTS is a lighthearted action-platformer that takes a familiar obstacle-course formula and gives it an unusual confectionery twist. Instead of relying entirely on conventional jumping abilities, the player controls a sweets-loving girl capable of producing different kinds of donuts and using them as tools for navigating a colorful kingdom. Developed and published by Vantan Game Academy, the game embraces a deliberately playful concept, with its dessert-filled environments and unconventional traversal mechanics giving it considerably more personality than its modest scale might initially suggest. The defining feature is the ability to create three different types of treats, each designed for a particular purpose. Ordinary round donuts can be stacked to create temporary platforms, allowing the protagonist to reach places that would otherwise be inaccessible. Triangular donuts function as springboards capable of launching her upward, making them valuable when dealing with large vertical gaps.
