"Praesidium" is a fairly mediocre 3D Unreal based third person platformer with a speedrunner focus as you try to platform your way through a mildly cyberpunk themed backdrop. You have a little shield thing you can throw around which doesn't add much to the somewhat shallow experience. The graphics in this game are passable, but could be better. And while it's vital for any game to have impressive visuals (gaming is a visual medium, after all), there's more to a game than just the graphics. To be worth a gamers time, the game must match top tier visuals with top tier gameplay, and that's not happening here. Not every "free" game really is. There's often MTX, or content locked behind DLC, or donations being requested, or any other number of things that could mislead gamers, but in this case I'm glad to say this really does appear to be a fully free game. Praesidium is a focused first-person action platformer that places speed, precision, and creative movement at the center of the experience. Developed and published by ShieldWork Studios, the game sends players across the rooftops of a futuristic city where reaching the destination efficiently is more important than fighting through traditional groups of enemies. Its modest scope allows it to concentrate almost entirely on traversal, making it especially appealing to players who enjoy speedrunning, improving personal records, and mastering mechanics through repeated attempts. The defining feature is the player's advanced shield, which is far more versatile than a conventional defensive tool. Automated turrets positioned throughout the environment can fire at the player and disrupt a promising run, so blocking incoming attacks becomes an important part of maintaining momentum. More interestingly, the shield can generate hovering gravity fields that propel the player through the air. This turns defense and traversal into interconnected systems, giving the player a way to protect themselves while also finding faster and more dramatic routes across gaps and obstacles.
