Project Eagle: A 3D Interactive Mars Base

Project Eagle is a neat little way to explore what a future Mars base might look like. There isn’t a whole lot of content, but I had fun poking around and the music was really nice. It’s short, but I enjoyed the time I spent with it.

Project Eagle: A 3D Interactive Mars Base is a bit different from most of the games I normally play because it is not really a game at all. It is a free interactive model of a possible Mars colony, built around Gale Crater near Mount Sharp and the original landing area of the Curiosity Rover. I can walk around the base, look at the different buildings and get a feel for what a future human settlement on Mars could actually look like. I like that it focuses on exploration rather than trying to turn Mars into another survival game. The biggest thing I appreciate is how grounded the project is. The Mars terrain comes from data collected by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, and the developers worked with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory when building the concept. The terrain is represented with very high accuracy, and the design of the base takes real technological and material limitations into account. That gives the whole thing a different feeling from simply loading up a fictional Mars map. When I am walking around, I know there was actual scientific thinking behind what I am looking at. "Mars is there, waiting to be reached."

It looks good at the beginning but it lacks content. This is just kind of map with nothing to see. A demo of what??? Where is the science or planning? It has a launcher an energy... well that can be thought by a nice child easily. The only good thing is that this is free. This looks like more a school project than a software footage or videogame or whatever it is. Nothing can be touched or explored it is just a view.
