Red Johnson's Chronicles - 1+2 - Steam Special Edition

3/10 God awful quick time events

Red Johnson was a drab experience in almost every way. While the esthetics were pleasant, the tone of the game was very inconsistent - it ranged from somewhat humorous and lighthearted to very serious, full of curse words and thriller-like narrative. It was difficult to adjust to when it so abruptly changed halfway through the game. The puzzles had a lot of potential, and some of them very actually interesting and logical, but a huge chunk were overly difficult and took half an hour per puzzle to complete, made little sense, were broken, or my favorite - one puzzle had multiple solutions but only one was accepted by the game. It was obviously ported from a console version and the devs were either lazy or very time-constrained - they made players perform QTEs and various trivial actions in the PC version with mouse movement. Which would be fine if it worked, but the mouse actions here barely register - you move your mouse, nothing happens, or sometimes you need to move your mouse slightly, sometimes fully, and there's no way of telling which one you need. I cursed at this BS after I failed some miniscule QTE action for ten times in a row (restarting the sequence every time) becaus…

This *could* have been a really good game, but the control scheme is a mess, and made it difficult to slog through. The story is decent, voice acting better than most in the genre, and the graphics are acceptable for this type of game. But the controls are really, really bad- it's not point and click so much as point and click and press the arrow keys, or maybe space, or sometimes v b and n. It's just not consistent and isn't fun to play because of this.

The game doesn't work. I get a black screen after choosing the episode.

It's that stupid kind of fun. Would recommend.
