It's fairly simple in appearance and the controls are... obscure? They're actually quite good, but somehow the button mapping isn't visualized in your face and the palette is kept tiny and on a hotkey instead of making use of the (lots of empty) screen. Maybe developed for steam deck resolution?? Despite all this it's off too a solid start with some fun puzzles nice and early on, and plenty of potential for more obscure ones. I wasn't too taken by the "puzzles" and prefer the problems (so far) but I love that both are available, as both scratch different itches. An easy recommend for fans of the puzzle-programming Zachtronics type fans, with enough novelty in the executors that it brings something new to the table.

Very fun game with a somewhat steep difficulty curve! Would've loved to see a slightly easier way into it or some sort of help from the game itself.

Robot Unlock is a puzzle game that really makes me think. Instead of giving me normal logic puzzles, it puts me in control of a small robot and asks me to work out instructions that will actually make it do what I want. The basic idea sounds simple at first, but I quickly found myself thinking much more like a programmer than I expected. It has that satisfying feeling where I stare at a problem for a while, change one tiny thing and suddenly everything starts working. The main gameplay is about creating solutions using a limited set of instructions. I have to plan how the robot moves and interacts with the puzzle while working within the space provided. What I really liked is that there is usually more than one way to solve a problem. I can come up with something that works and then go back and try to make it faster, smaller or use fewer instructions. That gives the puzzles much more replay value than simply finding one correct answer. Things get more interesting when multithreading becomes part of the challenge. I can run different execution threads at the same time, but I have to carefully synchronize them so they do not interfere with each other. This adds a completely differe…
