Rock 'N Roll

Rock 'N Roll is a remake of the classic Asteroids. Though honestly, I believe this game to be one of Zaxtor's better games. Yes it is another remake, although this time it felt as if a lot more work and passion went into making this. There is an extensive list of achievements which provided me with some sort of goal, along with Steam leaderboards. Tutorial was there, voiced over and informative (may I add the narrator sounds exactly like Olan Rogers in Final Space). The game itself was fun, had a lot more depth than other games and replayability. I personally did not like the movement, felt very slow and very difficult to learn and get use to. The turning was extremely frustrating and to be honest, I almost refused to play the game a few minutes in. The asteroids also look the exact same as G.E.O.S. gems which was quite annoying as well to get use to. Honestly, I would have given this game a mixed rating if it were possible. It is one of his better games, a lot more effort spent in to this one although still a lot to improve on to make it worth spending $13AUD for a remake of Asteroids.

I think my previous review was too dumb, so I deceide to rewrite it. I like asteroids and it's one of my favorite games. It's a game about carefully managing the ship's movements and shooting wisely to survive. I especially like Asteroid deluxe which made the original more challenging and fast phased, so I looked for something similar in steam store. This game looked quite promising on the store page as the game offered many colorful contents, but once I bought and played it I was disappointed by the controls. For someone who played Asteroids in Atari vault a lot, the rotating speed in this game was so slow that it was beyond the acceptable level. Fortunately The developer improved the controls, but there are still other bits I don't like : 1. I can't manually fire the bullets by tapping the button. one of the joys of asteroids was rapidly fireing bullets at big asteroids to destroy them faster and then carefully shooting bullets one by one to destroy small asteroids around me. that kinds of joy doesn't exist here as I can't shoot faster than it's automatic firing speed. 2. lack of frequent saucer encounters. Rock 'N Roll is a 2D retro pixel unabashed ripoff of Asteroids (copyright Atari 1979). Differentiating from the game, Rock 'N Roll includes a number of various powerups and other bells and whistles that add little, if anything to the old, obsolete Asteroids format. There's also a "hardcore" game mode where you bounce around at frenetic speed to see how long you can stay alive. There's welcome features such as control customisation and customisable resolution, but unfortunately this just scales the low quality sprites. There's no 4K support despite that resolution becoming the bleeding edge standard 8 years ago. There's no way to improve the poor graphics quality that's far below standards for a contemporary PC game. From a technical perspective, the game doesn't meet basic minimum requirements that most PC gamers expect as standard. A choice was made to use obsolete, decades old retro pixel "art" as a substitute for contemporary PC graphics. It's unclear if this is due to lack of budget or talent, regardless, the overall visual quality of the game is extremely low as a result. I love this game. It is super addicting in all the best ways, when I got this game I immediately got sucked in for the next few hours. All the different powerups and limited availability of some add a lot of depth and strategy to this WAY FREAKIN better version of Asteroids. Fight hard. Fight fast. Save the earth! This is like Asteroids should have been (if they had the technology). Really smooth/polished game. Love the feel of shootin dem rocks!!

DISCLOSURES: Not sure why it says 7 minutes unless time spent in offline mode wasn't counted. I played for over an hour total on 3 separate instances. Also, I know this developer from other games and his YouTube channel. One can look through my Steam friends and reviews and see at least 2 instances of not recommended titles, if not more. BRIEF REVIEW: The graphics, art design, and sound / music are what I'd call polished amateurism: it's clear that the bulk of the sound and graphic design was done by the author, but there's definitely marked improvement over time with his various games. Some will love it, some will hate it. Personally, I don't mind it at all. It adds a bit of personality to the title and it's clear what everything is supposed to be. The controls are responsive. The only issues I had with keyboard or gamepad was forgetting how to properly control an Asteroids-like game. The upgrades make sense. The boss fights offer a challenge but nothing too easy or unfair. While an hour is not enough time for one who is quite terrible at Asteroid-like games to judge the game's stat balancing in it's totality, everything early on seems to be well-balanced.
