About Roving in the Dark

Roving in the Dark is a cave exploration platformer set in 1996. You play as a bearded caver (known as "Local Spelunker") who is tasked with rescuing ill-equipped treasure-seekers while finding treasure, hidden there by a medieval thief, for the local museum.

Play as the famous bearded caver who had all his equipment taken! Making it difficult to help ill- equipped treasure-seekers while searching for the actual treasure for the local museum. Help Spelunker from the cave system itself, as the real challenge is the hazards found in the cave. Avoid slipping and falling into holes, getting hit by stones, getting super cooled, running out of batteries or being pushed by in by foreign cavers. Since you lost most of your climbing gear, navigating the caves will be quite a challenge. In the beginning you have to make due with just running, jumping and climbing up and down narrow passages. On your way you will find bits of your gear, opening up new areas. The game consists of 4 cave systems to explore, an over-world and several smaller locations like towns and lone houses.

Roving in the Dark is heavily influenced by the limitations of 8-bit era games, with tiny pixel art graphics, a low colour palette and a low resolution. It does not have music in game, but 8-bit ambient sounds instead.

Features
 • Four cave regions to explore
 • Light metroidvania styled game play
 • Old school 8-bit pixel style
 • Challenging gameplay

I am really enjoying this game. It has some wonderfully crafted NES inspired graphics that utilise a great colour palette and the sounds are spot on for the era too. The game revolves around rescuing treasure seekers and treasure in a dangerous cave network. Unlike some modern retro inspired titles, it is not scared to ramp up the difficulty, which is good. Overall, an excellent game and I highly recommend it.

Roving in the Dark is a neat and short exploration platformer, made by one person with Clickteam Fusion. You are some spelunker exploring caves, collecting treasures and rescuing people. Along the way you get some upgrades, which you will need to progress further. The controlls are tight, for me they were hard to get used to initially, but after playing the tutorial life got much easier. The spelunker can actually run, which I was not aware of at first, and this is the key for tricky jumps. Speaking of jumps, one odd mechanic you don't expect in a platformer is when you fall or jump from a higher platform to a lower platform you lose life or die ultimately. And dead comes very, very often. Luckily there are a bunch of checkpoints, but sometimes the way from one checkpoint to another can be tedious. If you know where to go and have great platformer skills, the game can be completed pretty quickly, so speedrunners will definitely enjoy this game. At the time playing this I found some glitches but I'm sure the dev will fix the issues. I clearly like Roving in the Dark.

I think this game is overpriced for what it offers. Though I did buy it this sale for 1.80€ or something i just didn´t really enjoy it, but im sure someone else will. It just seems lackluster in general and the gameplay too simple. Love the idea and hate to give it thumbs down - would have given it a neutral if possible. Thx for making the game though.
Roving in the Dark
Very nice little game with peace gameplay not overloading with bang/bong/boom flashing/screaming stuff. It looks retro/classic like Spelunky or Rick Dangerous and gameplay is also cool. Good job!

I would recommend this game for $5 or less. It's a short game and should be at that price point. Simple artwork and ambiance make for a nice atmosphere. The fall mechanics need to be tweaked because I shouldn't be losing half of my health from the equivalent of stepping from the sidewalk onto a road. Fun, but needs some work.

There are plenty of fun and playable metroidvania games out there, this isn't one of them: cheap deaths from collapsing platforms, falling objects that you can't see and having to repeat areas after dying again and again make this game far too annoying.
