Royal Bounty HD

RB HD has a charming pixelated art-style, clearly inspired by early HoMM games (or the very first King's Bounty, from 1990); the gameplay is old-school, turn-based with a large amount of units to choose from (plus each unit has 2 upgrade paths changing a bit the way they play, offering even more team customization) and different spells from different schools of magic; the soundtrack feels nostalgic and fits the game well; and the game doesn't hold your hand and lets you explore and figure things out; you can customize the speed of your character, the speed of battles, and there's also auto-resolve; also, I haven't encountered any technical difficulties, and the game only crashed once. The game has some shortcoming, it becomes repetitive fast, as you have to explore maps and find different coloured MacGuffins that allow you to unlock different paths, so there's a bit of backtracking involved; the game is a bit punishing, even on easy, and especially after reaching the final chapter; it's easy to get lost on maps, as there's no clear direction on where to go, and you'll end up exploring the whole map before figuring out the right direction; the story's almost non-existent; you get s…

Back in the day in the time before touchphones and even before smartphones there were PPC — pocket personal computers. Some dudes came together, ripped sprites from HoMM2 (that's why their sprites are in the stretched aspect ratio, because of DOS' 16 by 10) and assembled their own clone game for PPCs. It was called Pocket Heroes and was sold through SMS and shareware. Over the years they were constantly tinkering with it, porting to smartphones and then touchphones. It changed its name to Palm Heroes and then to Palm Kingdoms. Despite there being Palm Kingdoms 2 and Palm Kingdoms 2 HD Deluxe (absolutely erect) it is still the same ship of Theseus. They were slowly replacing the stolen sprites with more and more of their own re-draws. And they were slowly tinkering with a full singleplayer campaign. And it seems that very campaign was cut out into its own separate game, with most but still not all stolen sprites replaced. First it was sold as Royal Bounty and then as Royal Bounty HD. It is kinda a King's Bounty type game, but as it was based on HoMM 2 it doesn't exactly play like either of them. It may be that this game is too successful at what it is trying to do. I am confident I am the target audience of this game. I played King's Bounty (the original game this one is clearly an homage/spiritual successor to) for hours upon hours. I loved it, and consider it one of my favorite games from childhood. Royal Bounty HD is most certainly an accurate representation of that game, and I fear that is the problem. I loved King's Bounty. Then I played other games, newer games, that iterated new and different ideas in gaming. I grew to like and appreciate them, eventually even expecting the improved quality-of-life aspects of those games. I have, functionally, moved on from King's Bounty; much in the same way you move on from a teen relationship. It's great, it's fun, the memories are awesome, but you don't really want to go back to it. And when you try, you realize it isn't even what you are looking for anymore. Kudos to iosoftware for making this game. But you, the reader, probably won't like it. If you do, awesome. I hope there is lots of heavy petting and you get to 2nd base. It's kings bounty that was for the sega genisis and this is a great version of that game. The nestalgia is fantastic and well worth it.
