Sid Meier's Covert Action (Classic)

So I saw this sudden sale from Atari featuring some [i]really[/i] old vintage games, and got interested in visuals and stylistic choices of this particular game. I've never played something like this before, but decided to give it a go purely for aesthetics purposes, especially given that it cost a few dozen cents in my region with the discount. Oh boy did I make a mistake regardless... I knew that retro games are usually infamous for some really obtuse controls, but this one overcame all of my expectations, in the worst way possible. Not only the controls are basically impossible to figure out on a keyboard, the game also tells you absolutely nothing about them, there is even no scheme for controls so that I could learn them on my own. Even the 'tutorial' sections basically meet the wall in such a case, and the game brings nothing but confusion about its mechanics. Or maybe retro is just not for me...

Old school SId Meir's. Yes, the graphics are antiquated but if one remembers when this was bleeding edge it's a nostalgic trip down amnesia alley.

Covert Action oozes retro charm, but actually playing it is a different story. I picked it up on sale out of curiosity as it is a Sid Meier creation, and while the presentation is intriguing, the experience quickly turns frustrating. Interacting with the game feels like deciphering a hidden language. The inputs aren’t intuitive, and the game offers little guidance on how anything is supposed to work. A manual being included would help, but there isn't one. Steam has a helpful guide, but man, it's a lot. Instead of feeling like a clever espionage sim, it often feels like you’re wrestling with the interface itself. A fascinating relic, but one that demands a lot of patience. I do not have the patience.

Enjoyable 90s video game (once you get used to the controls) ! However, it would greatly benefit from a remake...
