Exciting World War II Submarine Action in the South Pacific!! by Sid Meier.

0400 hours, Tuesday 1942... BATTLE STATIONS!! BATTLE STATIONS!! Enemy convoy identified on radar!!
SILENT SERVICE, The Submarine Simulation, brings exciting action, great strategy, detailed graphics and an ultra-realistic simulation of a World War II U.S. submarine in the South Pacific.
SILENT SERVICE's outstanding features include: all the critical battle stations 0 engine room, conning tower and ship's bridge; challenging and realistic combat versus single ships and heavily escorted convoys; and an infinite variety of situations using complete maps and charts for the entire South-west Pacific and a sophisticated and realistic attack plotting system.
SILENT SERVICE is the most detailed and realistic submarine simulation for home computers. Player selected "reality levels" allow the player to customize complexity, and time scaling ensures that the actions and decisions are constantly required. SILENT SERVICE provides a wide selection of historical scenarios from individual attacks to patrol missions that bring challenge and fun to both the first time player and the experienced submarine veteran.
Will you, as submarine captain, select a quiet patrol sector in the Marianas Islands, or choose the dangerous waters off the coast of Japan? Is the submerged daylight periscope attack best, or do you charge in on the surface at night using only radar bearing to guide you? Do you pick off the enemy with a single torpedo shot? These decisions and many more are yours to make as you take your place among the elite ranks of the SILENT SERVICE!

Silent Service is a classic submarine simulation that lets you step into the shoes of a U.S. Navy submarine commander during the Pacific theater of World War II. Originally developed by MicroProse in 1985 and designed by the legendary Sid Meier, it’s one of the pioneering games in the simulation genre, blending historical depth with engaging gameplay.
Gameplay and Mechanics
Silent Service revolves around tactical submarine warfare. You’ll patrol the Pacific, hunt enemy convoys, and evade aggressive destroyers. Gameplay requires patience and strategy, as every move can lead to either a successful ambush or a deadly encounter. The game features two main modes: individual missions and an open-ended campaign, offering both short and long-form play styles. What makes this game special is the attention to detail:

Realistic Mechanics: Things like sonar detection, torpedo trajectory, and ship evasion techniques play a critical role. Maneuvering your sub and planning attacks feels both challenging and rewarding.
Multilayered Gameplay: You’ll alternate between plotting courses on a map and diving into tense real-time combat. Once you fire a torpe…

It's a relic - one of the oldest games on steam. Unsurprisingly, this has aged terribly with confusing controls and cryptic gameplay from the era of games where you spent longer reading the included manual than playing the game.

Silent Service is a historic submarine warfare simulation originally developed by MicroProse Software and designed by legendary game developer Sid Meier. First released in the mid-1980s and later made available on modern digital storefronts through publishers such as Atari and Nightdive Studios, the game represents one of the earliest serious attempts to bring realistic naval combat simulation to home computers. At a time when many games focused on fast arcade action or simple mechanics, Silent Service took a more ambitious direction by attempting to capture the strategic tension and calculated decision-making involved in commanding a World War II submarine. Its influence on later military simulation titles remains significant, and it continues to be remembered as a foundational entry in the submarine simulation genre. The game places players in command of a United States Navy submarine operating in the Pacific Ocean during World War II. The title refers to the “Silent Service,” a nickname historically used to describe the U.S. submarine force due to the stealthy nature of their missions. As the submarine captain, the player is responsible for carrying out war patrols deep in enem…

Not the best version available, but still a bit of fun to revisit such a classic. I doubt many will have much fun playing Silent Service, so maybe only grab it if you are a hardcore fan of retro games.

Processing! Please wait!!! Where is the music, the distinctive ULTRA Games sounds?! Agh right, of course: Sid Meier. A much more rudimentary port where everything is handled by pressing keys on a key board, you did not have the problem of running out of keys! Not the case, for example on NES, which was handled by an interesting approach: a cursor, like on a computer in 1989! Then why would someone with such extensive experience providing us with frustrating fun with his games on computer systems would not come to the same solution in 2023?! If you are looking for the real 80s feel: Looking through the periscope, the cacophony of gunfire, you see a ship, your sweaty fingers press the gun 5 times; bum bum bum bum bum 2 seconds later: bam bam bam bam bam! Target hit and sunk! 3500 tons to the ledger! While the engine running 1/3 speed ahead then diving: whiwiwiwiwiwi, sounds of firing torpedoes while the sonar: pkring! pkring! with the rumrumrumrumrum and bum... bum ominous announcement of the ships approaching to destroy you my dear reader then just download the rom. Aaah... my dear folk, such happy times.
