Snail Trek - Chapter 1: Intershellar is a charmingly compact adventure that captures the spirit of classic computer games while removing many of the frustrations associated with their aging design conventions. Developed and published by Phil Fortier, this first chapter introduces a crew of spacefaring snails searching for a new home after conditions on their original world become increasingly desperate. It is an intentionally small experience built around humor, puzzles, exploration, and a text-parser system that immediately distinguishes it from most modern adventure games. The premise combines genuine urgency with deliberately ridiculous comedy. After a long journey through space, the snail crew approaches a planet that is supposedly covered in lettuce and could potentially become a paradise for their civilization. Unfortunately, awakening from the voyage reveals that something has gone wrong. The ship has been damaged, evidence suggests that sabotage may be involved, and reaching the planet is no longer guaranteed. Snail Trek: Chapter 1: Intershellar is a really short adventure game, but I think it does a good job of making its small idea memorable. I am playing as a snail crew travelling through space looking for a new home, and things immediately go wrong when I wake up to find that the ship has been sabotaged. The goal is simple enough. I need to figure out what happened, repair the ship and work out whether the planet ahead is actually the safe new home my people need. It is basically a tiny science fiction adventure with a lot of old school Sierra inspiration. The text parser is probably the thing I enjoy most. Instead of relying completely on menus, I can type commands to interact with the world, which gives the game a proper old adventure game feeling. Thankfully, it is much easier to use than the old systems it is inspired by because there is auto suggestion and auto correction. I can also use simple commands like look or get without having to describe every little detail perfectly. That makes the old fashioned design much less frustrating and lets me concentrate on the actual puzzles.
