Strategy & Tactics: Wargame Collection

I review games and DLC based on whether the overall experience is worth your time and money. Is the game good? Fun, but not a good game Is the game worth it at full price? No Is it better to wait for a sale? 70% off and if you've played before Strategy & Tactics: Wargame Collection is a collection of games I played as a kid on my tablet about 10 years ago. When I noticed it on Steam, I was delighted to purchase it on PC for the nostalgia. Please read this review as coming from a nostalgic fan who genuinely loves these games in the collection, not as someone trying to tear it down. I have put my hours into this version, and after returning to it, I sadly have to give it a thumbs down because the PC port is unfortunately close to unplayable in its current state. There are many glitches, bugged achievements, frustrating UI, and the audio is so loud that it becomes unbearable. What makes that even worse is that the audio toggle itself appears to be bugged and does not work, and there is not even a proper volume slider to lower the sound in-game. One of the worst wargame.

This is definitely a case of you get what you pay for. When Norway launches an amphibious assault on mainland Germany and divisions can retreat into enemy territory without concern for supplies, you've lost me.

A crusty turn-based tactical war game with very limited presentation. It’s obviously trying to ape a board game with the static unit icons and bold map lines, but it feels cheap rather than stylistic. While the speed of the game is conducive to strategic thinking, where you can change moves and coordinate your units, it should have at least allowed you to move the faster units multiple squares in one round of orders. Then you have to scan the board to see if you missed any units, and the endless confirmations slow the game to a crawl, sapping out a lot of the fun. I also dislike how the units’ health is so difficult to read. For a strategy game that’s so basic, it’s not terrible; the WW2 game has a handful of campaigns with decently challenging missions. It has an experience system and a tech tree, even though I didn’t play long enough to figure out how they worked. I can’t say it’s a good game, but I think some dedicated players could have enough patience for it, even though it’s a bit too unengaging for me and there are definitely better war sims. ...but that’s only the WWII game. There are two other games in the pack. One of them isn’t exactly a game, it’s a “sandbox” …

In one word - enjoyable. In three - simple, yet engaging. Yes, it's clearly a mobile port. Yes, from time to time fingers get tired from the amount of clicking. Nevertheless, the strategy part of this game is very well done and not trivial by any means. I spent a lot of time experimenting and finding out the best ways to exploit the game and AI and I never felt bored. The campaign is also a very welcome addition and the cutscenes provide special depth to the game which I think is nice. If you like simple strategy games, I recommend picking this one up when it's on a sale.
