I've played all the other Sunrider games. I bought this when it came out, played it, didn't like the changes, and dropped it for 4 months. Came back at it fresh with no expectations, and I really have grown to appreciate this game for what it is. This team is excellent at creating turn based battle systems, and the charicters are fleshed out enough to make the plot compelling. If you played the other games, come at this with fresh expectations. If you are new, be ready to experience the low budget charm this game has to offer. If I had **** you money, I would throw a good chunk at this dev team. Buy it full price, support a team that continues to do good work.

Only for Fans of Sunrider. This Sunrider-Game is to easy, only the First Sunrider was really diificult in Space Whale Mode, every followed Game was more and more easier. The Whale-Mode is very easy in this Version, not any really challenge there, Also no Ship upgrade available, now you can upgrade only your Crew members. Please be back to roots as in First Sunrider Game. And some bigger maps for greater Battles and Strategic Battlefield would be perfect for this game.

well its a okish spinoff of the first game. pretty much largely the same story in a different setting (and of course different gameplay). if you are familiar with the original there is little "new" story to discover. characters are still goofy and your everyday anime cliches. gameplaywise it starts very strong untill the moment you realize there is no reason to not bring your biggest ships in every mission. there is hardly any downside, since all missions give you infinite turns and the ai will always move torwards you, so you can simply park your "ships of the line" in a (you know) line and fire broadside after broadside. the enemy's ship of the line also wont engage you on the same ranges you can reliably engage them, so you get like 1-3 turns (depending on wind) of free braodsides before they actually return fire (in which case they are usually sunk or near sunk). also the variety is pretty luck luster since the setting doesnt realy allow much in terms of different wepanory. sure you get special weapons like the fire rockets, mortar or harpune, but those are hardly used (minus maybe the harpune for boarding) since its usually better to just use your cannons (round/chainshoot) an…

Could only get bad end because of a prerequisite after hours gameplay which I now have to repeat because I lack a recent enough save. That alone is incredibly infuriating.

Fun reimagining of the original story. The game allows a lot of choices in the story with long term consequences - something often criticised as lacking in the original games. While the game appears to just retell the original story on first glance, it can deviate from the original a lot depending on your choices. Choices aren't just made via classic decisions in VN segments, but the story also changes depending the battles. The gameplay is very similar to Sunrider 4, though with changes to fit the new scenario. I.e. there's no inertia anymore, instead movement is influenced by wind (if your sail is set). The biggest change is the boarding system, allowing to take over enemy ships to use for your own (as opposed to having Ryders as additional units / being able to buy mercenary ships). Upgrading ships was also changed, now done via upgrade-items (i.e. different types / levels of cannons). So instead of permanently spending on money on a ship's upgrade, upgrades can easily by changed between ships or a ships loadout changes to fit the mission.
