Supermarket Times

This is a game about being in a supermarket and having the person at the till comment on what you’ve bought as you bag it up. With home delivery and self-checkout, I’m not sure if it even happens anymore, but it certainly used to, and it sounded like this. The game itself seems to take place in Dalston, and you play a silent, recent graduate of, perhaps, Central St Martins who probably knows all the stops along the N253. There are parts that are vile and parts that are very funny, but it’s all deeply observational and punches in every direction. I only wish the player could burn or flush the Musk shirt, but otherwise this is a great game, for the right audience. Fans of BritishProblems or Monty Python who think they understand post-Blair British humour will be left perplexed and annoyed, fans of the Mighty Boosh will love it.

Would I recommend this as a game? No. However, I would as an experience. As advertised, it is a shopping simulator at heart, where things are taken to the extreme and seen through an almost surrealist lens as it juxtaposes the regular with the wacky. At its heart, it is a true British experience that can be summed up as crude, both through its art style reminiscent of vulgar childish drawings and its deadpan humour. It walks the line of being comedic and awfully relatable. I really enjoyed just exploring and soaking in the atmosphere. It is something entirely unique. If you wanted a game with a long runtime or riveting gameplay, it isn't here. But if you want to see something silly and full of love, this is genuinely awesome.

Reminds me of shows like 12oz Mouse, YOLO, and Aqua Teen Hunger Force. If you’re looking for an absurdist experience in that same vein, this game absolutely delivers. There are a handful of puzzles and quests, but for me the main appeal was simply exploring and interacting with the surreal, bizarre characters and environments. This is definitely one for people who already have an acquired taste for absurdist humor—but if you’re like me, you’ll probably love it.

How can I explain the comedic madness of Supermarket Times ? Well if you’re in the market for a game that will make you absolutely flabbergasted and dying of laughter then this is the game for you. With the game using the lowest forms of humour to get the highest quantity of laughter and confusion. The art style is exquisite and most definitely unique, with each item being in a drawing style that can be only described as naive and innocent. Which is in stark contrast to the comical jokes.

A completely strange and absurd game whose only real goal is to make you laugh.... or make you feel a bit uncomfortable!! And clearly this is pure British humor as I like it!! The concept is super simple: you walk around a supermarket and can interact with pretty much everything. Products, customers, employees… almost everything has something to say. There’s a narrator with very dark humor who comments on your purchases and sometimes the lines are written in such a depressing way that it somehow becomes hilarious hehe at first you might think the dialogues are pointless but it’s actually the opposite. They''re genuinely fun to listen to full of improbable anecdotes ABSURD facts about FOOD, good wordplay, and lots of references deeply rooted in British humor! Gameplay side, it’s somewhere between a visual novel and a point & click game, so it's very accessible. The puzzles are simple, exploration is clearly encouraged with various possible interactionsand a map lets you move easily around this surprisiingly large supermarket. the real fun comes from poking around everywhere and seeing how far the game is willing to go with the nonsense.
