Terror At Oakheart

The game doesn't decide it wants to be a game until half way through, when it finally introduces fighting mechanics. Up to this point, there are no puzzles or anything noteworthy, it's moving your character from Point A to Point B. They introduce a hiding mechanic that is only used once and never touched again, in favor of walking to the objective. There was promise in being able to play as the killer as well as the victims, but there isn't any substance to it. Lots of potential, it was fun dodging and shooting monsters once the game locked in. Wonderful looking pixel art, I was especially impressed by the look of the final two boss fights, and there is a fun unlockable minigame after the main game, I just don't think the average player is going to be invested enough to make it that far.

[i]Terror at Oakheart[/i] mad it hard to come to a conclusion if should recommend it or not… in the end I decides against it. While the pixel-art side scroller delivers in parts of what he promises, especially the atmosphere, I personally found most of the levels to much “set on rails” and more like an interactive story – but with too few options. From the 9 chapter (including the Propleg) only 3 or 4 I found memorable/interestting. Especially the “main part” where you at first place the victims in the unavoidable summer camp and then slaughter them as monster figure “Teddy” was frustrating because, first you just move them “in place” and then only walk up to them and kill them in one pre determent manner. The business was done in minutes. Here chase and fight sequences and options for different fatalities would have really made the game great. As it is, only the final level is really a little bit challenging and also only to a certain degree. If you are an absolute fan of the horror-pixel-art genre maybe have a look… otherwise there are much more interesting games out there.

Blood, gore and a lost clown. Game length is about as long as watching a typical slasher movie but you get to experience it yourself. Easily worth adding to your collection.
