About Tharsis

✦ AI summary

Guide your damaged ship and dwindling crew through disaster after disaster on humanity's first Mars mission, managing resources, dice rolls, and impossible survival decisions in this turn-based strategy game. Navigate cryptic alien signals, catastrophic failures, and moral dilemmas while uncovering why this doomed expedition was sent to Mars in the first place.

A mysterious signal originating from the Tharsis region of Mars set us on a frantic mission. Who sent it? And why? Impossible questions, but in them lie the key to humanity’s survival.

Now, millions of miles away from home, a micrometeoroid storm has left us with a severely damaged ship, two deceased crew, and the sneaking suspicion this trip was doomed from the start.

Tharsis is a turn-based space strategy game. With dice. And cannibalism. It puts you in control of humanity’s first mission to Mars, just as it’s struck by a micrometeoroid storm. You must guide your crew through disasters, food shortages, and the unforgiving nature of space — all while maintaining your sanity amidst cryptic signals and warnings from Mars.

Defy the odds, make the difficult decisions, and embark on the most important mission in human history.

Dice aside, this is the most realistic depiction of how the trip to Mars would play out, if launched soon-ish or in the next 20 years. Except if some magical drive is invented, this really is where we're at. Oh, definitely 10/10, one of the best sci-fi games ever!

Very difficult rogue-like that requires you to measure your chances of success in every situation. Tharsis is a turn-based games whose premise is that there is a group of astronauts on a spaceship that is on its way to Mars, but every turn issues come up with the Temu spaceship so you have to manage your responses to them. Each turn your ship will receive a random amount of emergencies, which you have to fix by rolling 6-sided dices and using the values to get to a certain threshold. Of course you can leave the emergencies unfixed, and sometimes it is better to leave less bothersome ones to save your dice. Other than fixing issues, the dices can also be used by the current astronaut or the current room of the ship for a specific bonus. The astronaut bonus depends on the class of the astronaut. Some emergencies will either cause your ship to lose part of its health or the health of your astronauts, and if either of those goes to 0, then your ship gets destroyed or the astronaut dies. If the ship is destroyed or all your astronauts are dead, then the game is over. After each day, you can feed your astronauts food or even human meant for them to recover health and to gain additiona…

I managed to get 14 hours out of this game and felt like I got my money worth since I had gotten it on sale. $10 or under and I'd say pull the trigger.

I want to review this game based on the gameplay, but I cannot. After downloading the game and attempting to launch either from the Steam application or the desktop shortcut, the game crashes before I'm able to interact with the main menu options.

10 years later and I'm still thinking about it. I wish they'd make a mobile version.
