About Abbot's Book Demo
1680, Vicenza, Italy. Explore the ruins of an ancient religion that riddle the catacombs beneath a noble estate, where the shadow of a forgotten god has awakened to haunt the dreams of men. A dark tale in the classic, gothic tradition, The Abbot’s Book traces the lives of four generations of a family cursed by the corrupting influence of a mysterious book.
When complete, The Abbot's Book will be 8 episodes of VR narrative content. This demo shows a small slice of the 7th episode.

Good story, played smooth.3 found this helpful
This is a short and sweet 10 minute VR immersive experience / demo for a game that unfortunately, never made the light of day :( This was absolutely groundbreaking in its day (2016) because it ran perfectly on recommended hardware (Nvidia 970 I think) and was neatly done. The developers never quite got there though, after years of trying to get the game out (I dont think they got the backing) Still works well on modern kit (5080 , Valve Index on SSD) There is another 10 minute demo , that partners this : https://store.steampowered.com/app/649890/Caliban_Below/ in 2016 was incredible in 2026 it's a 6 out of 10
I really wished this turned into something bigger. It nailed the atmosphere and set design. I took my time exploring all the way through.
FYI for META QUEST 3/WINDOWS 11 Users: I initially couldn't boot up the game, but I used the fix in this thread: Paranormal Activity: The Lost Soul - Steam Discussions - Game Crashing - https://steamcommunity.com/app/467660/discussions/0/3881599865340609758/ The thread is actually for a different VR game, but it fixed this VR game too. If the game won't boot for you (i.e. you start it and then it just sends you back to VR Home after a few seconds), try the solution in that thread. It worked great for me. A very cool demo and a good example of an early VR game. Sadly, it's apparently been abandoned, so this and the spin off Caliban Below are all we'll ever see. Still, it's very short and worth playing just for the experience.

"Abbot's Book Demo" is not a game. It's an advertisement for a product called "Abbot's Book". Abbot's Book is not even a game, it's a VR movie "experience" with no actual gameplay... being pushed as a game on Steam if they ever bother to make it. But since this was dumped on Steam 9 years ago, it seems unlikely they'll go through with the rest of this non-game. But this isn't completely relevant because this is not Abbot's Book, it's just an advertisment for it, so it's not correct to try to review that completely distinct product. We must instead review this for what it is... an advertisement. If you enjoy advertisements, you can consume them for free on the web or on Youtube without needing to add them to your game library, download them, and then launch the advertising. It's impossible in a general sense to recommend people should do that over playing real, full games on Steam, and that applies here with "Abbot's Book Demo" too. Usually the purpose of these advertisements is to get you to shell out money to the developer to buy the full product, but the developer hasn't bothered actually making a product you can buy, leaving this as an advertisement for nothing. We mus…
