The Maze Contract is a really enjoyable little arcade shooter that feels like it was designed with old school action in mind. I fly a ship through a series of dangerous areas while fighting enemies, collecting upgrades and deciding how I want to approach each encounter. I liked the combination of retro presentation and more modern progression because the game feels familiar without simply copying an old arcade formula. The combat is built around direct movement and weapon management, but there is more strategy here than I initially expected. Enemies belong to opposing factions, and I can sometimes use their conflict to my advantage instead of attacking everything myself. I enjoyed experimenting with different routes and situations because it gives the otherwise straightforward shooting a tactical edge. The upgrade system is another strong part. I can improve the ship's defenses and movement while collecting different weapons from enemies. The ability to change weapons depending on the situation makes exploration more interesting, especially when I reach areas where my current loadout is not ideal.
