About The Mildew Children
Featuring a blend of 2D adventure and visual novel, The Mildew Children is a grim tale about a village inhabited only by children who follow savage pagan traditions. A young witch named Kyrphel and her sisters are bound to perform a macabre Ritual in order to save their village. A witch's demise during the ritual is not unusual, since not all can triumph over the Mistress of Death. But Kyrphel is strong enough to handle it. Or so she thought. Combining the elements of fairy tale and horror, the story draws on pagan folklore and ancient beliefs. Accompany Kyrphel and her friends in this grim, beautifully hand-drawn adventure game. Take part in the Ritual and discover the secret of the village, interact with peculiar villagers, bewitch, and overcome the affliction that haunts the young sorceress.
- A mysterious tale that spans across 12 chapters
- Over 8 hours of narrative and gameplay combining investigations, puzzles, quick-time events (QTE) and multiple-choice dialogues.
- More than 30 unique locations: the village streets, the tangled paths of the forest thicket, the burial ground, as well as unique interiors - from old battered huts to magnificent chambers.
- A series of tough decisions that will force you to think twice about how you proceed - will you go against ancient traditions or follow them to the end?
- 10 characters with a detailed personality and story, 100+ of unique portraits reflecting the characters' emotions during dialogues. Numerous side characters Kyrphel would have to interact with in order to fulfill her goals.
Sights & Sounds

Awkward

That subtitle is basically how I'd sum up the visual presentation of The Mildew Children in one word
Take, for example, a typical snapshot of the gameplay as you're exploring. Feel free to pull up an image search for screenshots to verify what I'm saying. To my eyes, it looks like characters are 3D-modeled and placed on scrolling 2D backgrounds. While not ugly per se, the primitive looking characters on the frankly gorgeous backdrops is a little jarring, almost like the assets are from two different games
Character animations are stilted and repetitive. Almost robotic. Additionally, turning around to face a different direction slingshots the screen to maintain your character's position at roughly the 1/4 width mark in the direction you're facing. Hope you're not overly prone to motion sickness
As a result, whenever the game is in motion, it looks and feels strange. When you're just talking to someone and can focus on the voice acting, story development, beautiful backgrounds, and expressive character portraits, though? The Mildew Children can be quite the scenic experience
I can't really judge the vo…5 found this helpful

The art and the music are phenomenal! The colors are really pleasing and perfectly sets the atmosphere for each scene. The music has an eerie sense in them no matter how homely it feels. Overall ATMOSPHERE in The Mildew Children is perfectly set, the dread and macabre in this village. The most eerie part is not the blatantly gorey scenes, but the fact that the villagers and every character treats each bloody practice as normal. It really sets you the kind of culture that prevails - both in their practice, customs, and beliefs. Another amazing aspect that deserves praise is the VOICE ACTING. As a non-russian speaker, I had no clue of the dialogue just from listening but even so I can hear each emotion and personality of every character even without reading the english text. The Voice actors are absolutely phenomenal! The game mechanics I applaud in their immersion. You feel for the struggle of remembering these are children, Iva especially. SPOILERS: Her world has turned upside down, she was told she'd die early, the pressure to remember multiple rituals and incantations in such a short amount of time as her body adjusts to poison after poison. The mechanics really lets you feel…1 found this helpful
Nice
Just waste of my time. The story is incredibly poor, the speech patterns in the game are incredibly strange, making it difficult to comprehend. I'd say the story or characters are interesting, but no, there's no depth to the plot. You also have to memorize meaningless poems, which makes it even more difficult to complete, and you have to take pictures of the text... come on. Getting to the good ending intuitively is difficult, and impossible without a guide. Even the normal ending wasn't explained in detail, just dropped, like, thanks for the game, goodbye.. I cant recommend this game, sorry
