About The Naysayer

A souls-like story penned atop digital parchment.

Decide where the story goes, what actions you'll take, how you'll fight, and what you'll say.
Centred around one boss:
  • Get to know your foe, and find a way to defeat him. Use perseverance, hidden tactics, and refutes to prove your innocence against unjust allegations.
Don’t let his trickery mislead you:
  • You’ll be corralled and persuaded to believe things that aren’t true. Hold tight to who you know yourself to be.
Trust your advisors:
  • Lean on the wisdom and experience of your entourage. They're there to help.
Content warning: this game covers uncomfortable material and is not suitable for children, or for everyone. A detailed (spoiler-ish) content warning can also be found in-game.

The idea behind the game creates curiosity and encourages players to pay attention to the details. The atmosphere is another strong point. The presentation, sound, and overall tone work together to create a specific feeling. For players who enjoy experimental games that focus on mood and ideas, this can be the main reason to keep playing. The game also benefits from its simplicity. It does not overload the player with unnecessary systems, allowing the central concept to remain the focus. This can make the experience feel more direct and memorable. However, the biggest weakness is that the gameplay may not offer enough depth. Experimental games can be interesting because of…

I feel bad leaving a negative review for this, since it's free and the concept of a "text-based soulslike" is certainly interesting, but it isn't really a soulslike. You eventually get to a point where you can't progress without starting over. That was frustrating. I also think the writing is a bit clunky (and there are parts of it that very strongly feel AI-written, which doesn't bother me in and of itself, but does bother me since the dev says he didn't use AI for that)
