About The Tenth Line

The Tenth Line is the first commercial game project from Sungazer Software. During your adventure, you'll guide the princess of the tiny nation of Easania, far from home and desperate to escape the clutches of a mysterious cult in hot pursuit. Along with her unusual but reliable companions, you'll explore a vibrant world of humans, beasts, and dragons, all struggling to coexist in the tension following the assassination of the king of the nation of Skyweather. Troubled times are ahead, indeed - the long-prophesied end of the world is fast approaching, and with only her wits, her blade, and her royal upbringing to guide her, can she make it home to her family before the end of days?
Gameplay involves adventuring through distinct areas using traditional 2D platforming mechanics, but with a twist: each character is controlled separately, and can move, attack, and interact with the world in unique ways. You'll also visit the occasional village or safe haven, and have an opportunity to take on new quests, play cards, and chat with the locals. Enemies roam the wilds, meanwhile, and can be engaged or ambushed by your heroes, thrusting your party into battle.

Battles are turn-based with an active timing element: you'll decide on commands for each character, then carry those attacks out using careful timing and targeting. Then, it's the enemy's turn to retaliate, giving your party an opportunity to defend. And, with up to twelve enemies on the offense at one time, survival is not always a safe bet. Fortunately, eliminating large numbers of foes at once will leave fewer attackers behind to retaliate, and will also grant your party more momentum, allowing for even more powerful skills to be used during the next attack!

Progression is handled solely by finding and applying items to your characters. Items are plentiful, and have multiple uses, so smart distribution of your treasures is key to survival. Characters can use items for training, powering up their skills and their defensive abilities, or use them to empower their "specialties" and gain a personal, tactical edge in combat. Your party members can also gain "power levels" by winning battles, completing quests, and collecting power fragments in the world. Power levels can be spent on the "Power Flow" board by playing a puzzle-like minigame to increase stats and unlock new skills. It is a challenging, refreshing method of "leveling up" that rewards careful planning and smart decisions.

A standard dual-analog gamepad is highly recommended, though the keyboard is supported.
  • A completely original, unique RPG experience that takes inspiration from the 32-bit era of gaming.
  • Explore the world through fast-paced 2D platforming by controlling three separate characters, each with unique movement mechanics and ways of interacting with the world.
  • Take on dozens of foes at one time through turn-based RPG battles with an active timing element.
  • High quality background and sprite artwork, a grand, varied soundtrack, and voice acting for each major character during battles.
  • Unique progression and leveling mechanics for your characters.
  • Multiple hours of gameplay, plus post-game challenges and a New Game Plus mode.
  • Optional story-focused mode available that removes all enemy encounters and simplifies story-based battles.
  • Play "Quad Pro Quo" (an in-universe collectible card game) against multiple characters and inhabitants of the world to win unique prizes and complete your collection!

Really fun turn-based RPG that I think deserves more attention than it appears it may have gotten! Highlight is definitely in the story and some of the combat systems and leveling, with shoutouts to the wonderful pixel art and background work. Be sure to talk to NPCs with each of the controllable characters to get different conversations, world building, and character development! Bonus points for the optional card mini-game; it reminds me of FF9 a bit, and I adore that one, so I really liked a similar game here. :) Game runs wonderfully, encountered no bugs. Controls work on both a keyboard or a controller (played on controller personally); you may want to look into rebinding no matter which you choose, because some assignments seem strange, like buttons to defend in combat versus the line-up they are on screen. You may need to be prepared to return to title screen to reload a screen every so often if you accidentally knock an item out of the map (swamp area) or want to grind a little bit. On that note, played on the intended difficulty because I saw post-game and NG+ are not available to lower difficulties!! So be aware of that. Having played on it though, I found I didn't not …

Definitely the best thing I've ever bought for 77 cents! I had a lot of fun playing it, really digging the music, the backgrounds of the various areas, and the pixel art for all the characters. Cool stuff! The story also ended at a good moment without getting repetitive, and it's even got post-game challenges set up. Neat! I can only recommend this.

Despite being a simple game in terms of what direction it goes, I did find myself awed by the turn of events that did catch me off guard. The story is rather plentiful and nice with a universe that supports its artistic angle and atmosphere to a degree, which a lot of RPGs sort of fail at. The music and character design within this game are on point and beautiful. Always appreciate when games go beyond the conventional look for characters and create beings that are outside the anthropic space. In relation to that, I also enjoyed each location I visited with a rather inquisitive, big-eyed happiness to scan these environments. The art of this game was wonderful! I don't particularly have a favorite track this time around in regard to the music. Each and every one deserves a similar position and never feels like one didn't deserve a smile and a nod. The main complaint I 'could' say about this game always stirs back to me hating platforming, so areas such as 'The Feverlands' and 'The White Cliffs' were naturally frustrating and anger-inducing, but I can't really hold the game at fault for that. I did, however, like the mechanic of switching between different characters to perform di…

Thus far, my one complaint is that the dodge/defend mechanic makes very little sense. I'm honestly unsure how I'm expected to know which ally is being targeted, nor is there really time to anticipate the attack. It just feels like an unnecessary mechanic that wanted to be more like Paper Mario but isn't, and I worry the game is balanced around its use, where as thus far, the only option I've had is to hit A B and X at the exact same time the moment I see any movement. Going further, the tutorial mentioned that the fighting game input for super defense is on the screen, yet it isn't, nor did it tell me what the button combo is for the other two super defenses. It also mentioned that you have to hold the combo, but the tutorial didn't continue till I released the combo.

The timing aspects are not my jam, at least not the way they are handled (more Valkyrie Profile than Paper Mario). Still, if you ask me what I like most in gaming, it's JRPGs that experiment heavily with what it means to have turn-based battles. I have a big soft spot for this sort of creativity.

The Tenth Line from Sungazer Software LLC is an ambitious indie RPG that blends classic turn-based combat, side-scrolling exploration, light platforming, and character-driven storytelling into a surprisingly cohesive and memorable adventure. At first glance it evokes the era of 16-bit role-playing games with its colorful pixel art and fantasy setting, but it quickly becomes clear that it is not content to simply imitate its inspirations. Instead, it builds upon them, layering mechanical experimentation and narrative personality on top of a familiar foundation to create something that feels nostalgic yet distinctly its own. The story follows Princess Aria of the small nation of Easania, whose life is upended by a sudden attack tied to a larger conspiracy and an ominous prophecy. Forced to flee her home, she soon forms an unlikely party with Rik, a quick-witted kobold, and Tox, a powerful and sardonic black dragon. This trio immediately gives the game a unique tonal balance. Rather than leaning solely into high fantasy melodrama, The Tenth Line thrives on the interplay between its characters. Aria’s determination, Rik’s grounded pragmatism, and Tox’s dry humor create conversations t…
