About The Works of Mercy

'The Works of Mercy' is a SHORT (2h) psychological thriller inspired by the classics of the genre. The game’s plot revolves around mysterious killings committed on seemingly random victims. Only this time it’s the player who becomes the murderer.

The game tells a story of a personal tragedy and wrecked psyche. When a cryptic tormentor forces the protagonist to kill people in order to save his family, the game’s hero (and the player) is posed with a series of dramatic questions. Who is the tormentor? Why is he so vengeful toward the protagonist’s family? How far do you have to go to satisfy him? How can you justify the killing in the sake of saving someone’s life? And how will you cope with the sense of guilt?

Answers to the posed questions can be found in multiple endings playing more than once.

The game will leave the gamers with a lasting impression and face them with the question: how much could I sacrifice for my family? It will take the players through a dark world which gradually dissolves to an increasingly surreal vision of the protagonist’s mind captured in a lethal trap.

WARNING! The game is about 2 hours long.

The Works of Mercy is an unwanted psychological game that before its release promised a great and invigorating atmosphere but in return brought a short apartment vlog with no mercy or attacks on a successor to the acclaimed P.T. Note: Watch your merciful head when trying to get to the basement as apparently the developer thought that dwarves lived in the stairwell.

A genuinely disturbing and tense psychological thriller that keeps you hooked until the very end. Despite being a seven-year-old title, it remains a fantastic hidden gem of the horror genre

The Works of Mercy is a short, narrative-focused psychological horror experience developed and published by Pentacle that places its emphasis not on survival mechanics or traditional scares, but on moral discomfort and emotional unease. Rather than casting the player as a helpless victim fleeing an unseen threat, the game deliberately subverts expectations by forcing the player into the role of someone compelled to commit terrible acts under extreme pressure. Its ambition lies in exploring guilt, coercion, and responsibility, framing horror as something internal and ethical rather than purely external or supernatural. The story revolves around an unnamed protagonist whose wife and child have been abducted. A mysterious figure named Eugen contacts him and issues a horrifying ultimatum: carry out a series of murders, or his family will die. From this point forward, the game becomes a grim psychological descent, asking the player to witness and participate in acts they may find deeply uncomfortable. The narrative attempts to challenge the player’s sense of agency, constantly blurring the line between choice and inevitability, and questioning whether actions taken under duress absolve…

If you hope to understand the meaning of this game.. I will disappoint you. Even after finishing I have the feeling "what was that??". Either main hero was on drugs, he was lying in mental hospital or imagined everything, because of some trauma. Cheesy lines, senseless choices, colorful flares in some cut-scenes, creepy paintings.. vague ending.. The main reason why I didn't write a negative review is a lack of neutral option. Because this is not a game you will want to remember. My playthrough to understand what I mean.

Was really looking forward to this but WOW what a bad experience this was! I only played about 20 full minutes of it as there were too many bugs and always had to start again, where were the saves? Non existent saves that's what! Save your money please don't buy this game! REFUND incoming!!!
