About 摩尼遊戯TOKOYO
mani yugi TOKOYO is a pixel art shooting game inspired by the Japanese Buddhist worldview. In it, players become a priest who gets into a mokugyo (a Buddhist temple block) and goes on a journey around the Rokudo. Players can choose from six stages, Tendo (heaven), Ningendo (human world), Chikshodo (animal world), Jigokudo (hell), Gakido (hungry world), and Syurado (fighting world), where they save wandering souls using the power of "Yoshi Yoshi" (there there) launched from the mokugyo. The goal of each stage is to reach the Kannon waiting for you at the end.The game also includes collectable elements, where delivered souls are gathered around the temple.
The purpose of this game is to reach its final stage, TOKOYO (the place of the truth).

Crim's Humble Opinion Curator
Perseverance Is Key
Maniyugi TOKOYO is a relentlessly hard shoot em up set in world that uses a journey around the Rokudo in order to reach the place of truth to find your enlightment. This game got an english translation so the lore and mechanics are much more accessible to players who don't understand the original language. One of the first things I recognized in this game that brought me back was the ability to switch worlds. I instantly thought of the game Ikaruga with it's color switching mechanic and in this game you will have to master the switching mechanic to survive. There are six main stages followed by a final stage and final boss. You can play the first six stages in any order but have to play the last two in order. During each stage you can either be killed by running out of inspiration or getting knocked off screen by moving blocks. The blocks is where you will have to use your switch because each block exists on one plane but not the other. The influence loss on hits is pretty forgiving but the blocks are where you will get relentless one hit deaths. At the end of each…19 found this helpful

Wow, this was a surprise release for me that I had no clue was coming out. I like it a lot! It's a weird hybrid two screen shmup that I assume was on 3ds. It has such a unique aesthetic and so much charm. Currently 4 of the 6 displayed levels down and this game can be hard. The language barrier doesn't really mess with anything up to this point as long as you know to meditate infront of the master to get to level select. I highly recommend! https://youtu.be/kaKpAO1VUQo9 found this helpful
My mouse hovered over this game as I was scrolling down to the bullet hell section of the Steam Golden Week sale page. The screenshots that popped up immediately caught my attention, both because of the type of game and its art style. For whatever reason, this game was listed in another category and, if not for the luck of my mouse cursor hovering over it, I would not have found it. Relative to other games of a similar flavor, the word I would use to describe TOKOYO is chaotic. It has a colorful art style and the thematic essence of the game is not something seen elsewhere in this genre. Topped off with surprisingly good music (hopefully the developers release the soundtrack on Steam), this game has quickly become one of my favorites. A few quirks with the game (some of them may be user error): 1. I cannot figure out how to change the keyboard controls. This is the most annoying one as, while the default controls are definitely playable, I would prefer to use something else. 2. I cannot find any setting for volume in-game. Not a big deal as I simply lowered the volume via the Windows mixer. 3. I cannot find any way to exit the game. Again, not a big deal as I simply Alt+Tab and c…1 found this helpful
WARNING: originally this review was VERY negative until I found out that the game was unplayable due to excessive speed on the newest PC. There are remedies for that, like limiting the framerate, although I found it better to try on an older computer. Can't excuse iffy coding and other issues though, so while I don't hate Maniyugi Tokoyo anymore, it's still a hard game to recommend; I wish Steam had a third option for "Mixed", but lacking that, it stays more on the negative side. If it were only for its visuals and sound, the Buddhist theme, and the overall craziness that harkens back to certain Japanese games of the 1990s, it would be great, and the mechanic of switching between two planes of a world, which also freezes some enemies that can be active only on one plane, has great potential. One level even blocks the player from using it freely, having it only at pre-set points and switching depending on the side of the screen you are on, while another has the player cycling between different forms, from a whale to a microbe, with obviously different abilities at maneuvering between obstacles. Bosses exist on both planes and have two lifebars to whittle down. Unfortunately…
Very unique but good shooter ported from the 3ds. Recommended for the cool different stage themes alone
