Trouble Comes Twice

Disclaimer: I also played the DLC, but it doesn't have much to offer. Too short and bland. It's inevitable to find vns with interesting premise, but subpar execution. Especially on Kickstarter. And I backed this one. Trouble Comes Twice is what happens when a developer has a favorite. It's not always noticeable from the get-go, but a certain character may be forgiven for being rude, harsh and obnoxious far too easily by the rest of the cast. It's even worse when it's a protagonist. Hazel is that protagonist. She's the "girl boss" in the worst possible way. She sees herself above everyone: family, friends, strangers. Often snarky and sarcastic, she only cares about herself. She does get a few moments of self-reflection, but it's not enough. She has no character development and imo only has one believable romance option. More on that later. Jace lives in a shadow of his sister, in more ways than one. From writing standpoint, he can be rude and unlikable but not nearly as bad as Hazel. From content stand point, his routes are more surface level. Trouble Comes Twice is a romantic comedy visual novel that turns an unusual sibling challenge into the foundation for a surprisingly expansive dating adventure. I dont want to give the game a not recommended, so thats why its a thumbs up, but this will be a mostly critical take of the things I disliked, the game is good, art is good, but some of the choices made were annoying enough I wanted to mention them. My only issue really is with SOME aspects of the writing. I think its overall fine, but theres 4th wall breaks in the form of little sprites of the two main characters talking to each other about the game and their behaviors, this has been done so far to justify design/ writing decisions, taking the bad writing approach of addressing the annoying text and assuming that makes it better. For instance its mentioned that all the characters are hot for promotional reasons, this is stupid in general. If you wanted to make people less conventionally attractive then just do it, dont blame marketing. It also comments on the characters being overly flirty, and this is definitely done to save time on writing, all of the internal dialogue regardless of route will have your character essentially crushing on and objectifying literally everyone including her/ himself. I’ve finished 5/8 routes so far and I’ve quite enjoyed them. The MCs have very strong and unique personalities, and each love interests personality is totally different so it’s a nice mix of relationships. I will say that I think there could definitely be more romance build up— often the game reads more like slice of life media rather than romance, which is fine but I prefer more romance. I think the pairings with the most chemistry are for sure Jace/Stephanie and Hazel/Cameron. I really enjoyed Jace’s personality and how he acted with Stephanie, and it was clear he fell for her pretty quickly. I also thought Hazel and Cameron fit each others personalities best and they obv have the most sexual chemistry based on the after story. Another thing that threw me a bit off was the change in art styles between the sprites and CGs - even the CGs themselves didnt look like they were in a consistent art style the whole time. I don’t think it was necessarily bad, but it was definitely distracting at first. Overall, it’s an enjoyable game and I love the twist that you get to play as both twins. Interesting characters, nice story, good humor.

It's a very good game, I like the routes I played and how they were written; but I'm not gonna lie, I expected longer stories on the Bonus DLC, the base game however it's very well made.
