Wild Country

I've not even put a full hour into the game but I definitely have both some hopes and concerns! The good: I like the art style, it's cute cozy and the mechanics I think are pretty easy to learn. I hadn't expected the open world element and the dialogue is cute. There already being cosmetics to unlock and seemingly zones to explore with various silly conversations to be had bodes well! This feels like a game I could potentially really enjoy! The bad: Firstly, everything moves VERY slow. Transitions between turns and various actions taking place, even just drawing cards, feels oddly tedious. An option to speed up the game as a whole would be nice! The UI could use some work, especially in the overworld. In the game itself I found myself wishing I could select a card to bring it to the center of the screen and read not only the effects of the individual cards but also what the symbols meant. They aren't the hardest thing to just figure out but a little more clarity I think would help to make this game more approachable! I'm not usually one for deck-building games, but the blending with city-building on a map grid added an engaging extra dimension, even with relatively simple card combinations. Usually, I find the learning curves and long-established metas of deck-builders too intimidating to get into, but not with Wild Country. The art direction and sound design is also immediately cute and endearing, making this a great pick for anyone looking for a cozy vibe with their chill strategy game.

I generally like this game and think that there are some solid bones here, and am leaving a positive review as genuine effort has been put into this game and 9 reviews total is a very unfortunate launch. I have been keeping an eye on this game as I am always eager to find deck builders which have permanent progression (i.e. not rogue-likes), and was very excited to try it out. But while the fundamentals of this game is right, there are many polishing issues remaining such as the abysmally slow match animations, the mouse cursor remaining on screen as you run around the over world and resolutions being cap out at Full HD (i.e. 1080).

Pros - Good world building and story elements. - An array of quirky charming characters with fun dialog. - I appreciate they've tried to add some additional quest types to add more variation to the game-play. I think a-lot more is required though. - Controls are OK. - UI is pretty good. - The card game mechanics are interesting but I think it needs a lot more cards Cons - Can be quite glitchy, things like earlier conversations replaying, conversations replaying with no character present on screen. I've also had several times where the in-game notepad for quest tracking and map won't appear (just the audio plays) - The graphics in the non-card section are fairly poor quality by today's standards IMHO and there is a weird tearing effect every so often, maybe some artifact from aliasing? It seems to be less visible with lower graphical presets. There is no ability to fine control the graphics other than presets. - The card game suffers the issues of pretty much every other card game in that it just eventually gets very repetitive. I love this game and previously reviewed it recommending it. However, I'm now unable to play the game and must change my review. Due to the game not having cloud saves I've started it 4 or 5 times now due to computer issues and buying a new laptop. It was super annoying, but ultimately my fault, not anything the game did. On my current (and what I hoped to be final full) playthrough everything went as it had before until I saved after reaching the second area and when I returned to play again I found the game locked with a bunch of nonsense in the dialog box. I've never seen this before and I'm not able to do anything but quit the game. It's very disappointing because I truly enjoy Wild Country, but this has made it unplayable.
