About X-Out: Resurfaced

Now it’s up to you alone to stop an alien invasion from the depths of the ocean in this legendary, home computer era shoot ‘em up dredged up and faithfully rebuilt for modern platforms – X-Out: Resurfaced!

In 1990, the year of X-Out’s initial release on Amiga, it stood out as a breath of fresh seaside air in the stale shoot 'em-up space.
Partly, because it didn’t take part in “space” as so many games of its genre did (and still do) but instead went for a dive through underwater worlds.
But what really pushed it further than its other side-scrolling competitors was its shop system allowing players to mix and match from a wide variety of ships, weapons, and other accessory parts to build their fleet making every playthrough (attempt) feel different and unique.
Now 2025 X-Out the highly challenging underwater shoot ‘em up from game developer legends Rainbow Arts is finally returning.
ININ and Ziggurat have collaborated to bring you a faithful remake completely rebuilt from the ground up and greatly improved.

The impressive sprite work of yesteryear has not only been remade into even more impressive modern high-resolution sprites but also greatly expanded upon with particle and lighting effects. 8 varied stages, the enemies, the bosses, the ships, the projectiles; Everything shines in a brand-new light!

Apart from the visual journey each playthrough, you’ll embark on a musical one as well: epic synth soundscapes that drive you forward by none other than yours truly, the magnificent Chris Huelsbeck. In addition to him remastering his original works, we have committed ourselves to creating 6 entirely new tracks as well.

And not just Chris Hülsbeck, we also managed to get in contact with Ogan Kandemiroglu, brother and co-artist of Celal Kandemiroglu who created the original iconic key art of X-Out, to take on that task for the remake as a tribute.

Of course, the shop system is back and thoroughly improved as well: New preconfigured load-outs allow you to jump straight into the action, added item descriptions helping new cadets configure and build their fleet, and FINALLY marked the available slots for your weaponry.

Should you still feel overwhelmed by X-Out’s challenge, then maybe it’s time for a co-captain. Enlist a friend and face the terrors from the ocean deep together in local 2-player coop!

If you think you’ve seen everything there is to the game already then prepare to have your bearing changed and your gyro twisted in the Mirror Mode and its reverse scrolling levels!

  • Experience a fresh but faithful take on a real shoot-’em-up classic!
  • Get dazzled by the new and beautiful sprite work mixed with shiny particle and lighting effects!
  • Take a journey through new and old synth soundscapes courtesy of composer legend Chris Huelsbeck!
  • Choose one of three load-outs or build your own fleet in the improved shop system!
  • Grab a trusty ally and face the depths together in a 2-player couch coop dive!
  • Get your world flipped, turned upside down in the Mirror Mode!
  • Too challenging? Don't fret we got some cheats for you to breeze through the game with ease!

✦ AI summary

Players praise this remaster as a faithful and loving recreation of a classic 16-bit shooter that holds up remarkably well, with thoughtfully updated visuals and audio that respect the original while modernizing for modern displays, plus customizable ship loadouts that add replay value. The main criticism is that the game is quite short, with some players completing it in around 20 minutes, which may limit its longevity for those without strong nostalgia for the original.

I played the legs off the original Amiga game and finished it. This is an almost perfect update, the dev clearly loved the original and it shows. Fonts are updated for modern resolutions but the underlying graphics are kept intact with the addition of some mild effects. The fantastic music is given an touch up without spoling it. For those who don't know the original, it's like an Irem x Scramble shooter that can be fiendishly difficult without feeling unfair. The ability to customise your ship, down to trading off quantity for bigger guns or abilities, allows you try levels with different loadouts. I always liked the way the levels transitioned from the surface down to ink black depths. Still holds up and still awesome. Edit. Includes the C64 sountrack. Incredible what they could do with the humble SID chip.

X-Out: Resurfaced demonstrates how a classic title can be brought back for a modern audience without losing the qualities that made it stand out decades ago. Developed by KRITZELKRATZ 3000 and Rainbow Arts and published by ININ, the game revives one of the more distinctive side-scrolling shooters of the early 1990s. Instead of venturing through outer space like many of its contemporaries, X-Out plunges players into a dangerous underwater world where hostile alien forces have emerged from the depths. The premise remains simple, but its aquatic setting gives it a personality that immediately separates it from the countless shoot 'em ups that have come and gone over the years. One of the game's defining strengths is its extensive customization system. Before entering a stage, players are tasked with assembling their fleet by purchasing submarines, weapons, and support equipment through an in-game shop. This mechanic adds a strategic layer rarely seen in arcade-style shooters, as every decision influences survivability and combat efficiency. Players can experiment with numerous combinations, creating specialized builds suited for different playstyles. For those who prefer to jump dire…

a perfect throw back into the beginning of video games played at home. It's one of the most amazing side scrollers I've played my whole life. Most it's had the most iconic Intro incl. music I've remembered. This "resurfaced" version is a lovely homage to the original, especially the the option to select the old C64 midi sound. I love it...

If you have nostalgia for this game. Try it. I bought this when it was new, on the Amiga 500. However, this took me about 20 minutes to complete.
