Is Hogwarts Legacy worth it?

What it is

Hogwarts Legacy lets you play a fifth-year student in the 1800s wizarding world, and its greatest strength is simply being there. The castle is beautifully realised, full of secrets, moving portraits and shifting staircases, and casting spells in combat is genuinely satisfying once you are chaining together stuns, throws and elemental hexes. Broom flight and the open Highlands beyond the school give it real scale, character creation is refreshingly inclusive, and for anyone who grew up wanting to attend Hogwarts, exploring it is a treat. On PC it is largely a solid port, and that moment-to-moment sense of place is its biggest draw.

How it holds up

The wider content thins out fast. Side quests and the many map collectibles lean heavily on repetition, the Room of Requirement crafting systems feel bolted on, and the main story trails off rather than building to a strong finish. Companion characters are likeable but underused, there is no meaningful morality system despite the dark-magic hooks, and enemy variety is limited. It is a wide game rather than a deep one, and the padding shows over a long playthrough. Performance can also wobble in busy areas on weaker rigs.

The verdict

It depends. If the setting alone excites you, the exploration and combat carry it comfortably and you will get dozens of enjoyable hours. If you are indifferent to the licence and want a tightly designed RPG, the repetition may wear thin. Either way it is not one to pay full price for; it is worth it whenever it dips near its all-time low, so check the current price on its page first.
