Burden of Command™

I hated every second I gave to this game. It felt like I was trying to learn a very complicated boardgame from someone who wasn't good at teaching it. Many exchanges went along the lines of: Me: I dunno, I guess I will move my troops here Game: oh no, you can't do that Me: why not? Game: not telling. Wow I did not expect to like this game. It can be ugly at times, it looks amateurish, and there are certainly plenty of game crashing bugs. But I still very much enjoyed this game because its strengths surprisingly overcame its weaknesses. Of course as a game, most important is the gameplay, and you can divide it into two sections, the main combat, and the choose your own adventure style dialogue tree between missions. The combat is satisfying and realistic. Unlike most other games in the genre where you simply shoot to kill your opponents, you need to capture them in an assault after suppressing them sufficiently. This means that you cannot simply camp and play defensively, if you wanted to complete a mission you knew you had to take some risks and those risks would weigh in on you. Because there was no requirement to really finish any of the missions to continue, if you failed, you could choose to withdraw. In fact some of the missions are so difficult that sometimes the smart option is to give up and protect your men. This is where the leadership comes into play. The game describes itself as a leadership RPG and it really works that way. The dialogue and the missions interact…

Awesome game!! I know the Dev personally and he,s a great guy, and although the tutorial is very long and may throw some gamers off, its definetly worth doing since once the game opens up its a fantastic game.

This is exactly the type of game I have been waiting for. Hard, Harsh Strategic game that does not care about you or your feelings. It's up to you to see it to the end, and it's up to you to bring home the soldiers following your orders. This is the game that you will remember from time to time after you have completed it.

Slow-paced, tactical gameplay with a good story. Makes you think!

Burden of Command Is probably one of the best turn based strategy/wargame combos I have ever played. It is very rough around the edges in places but has excellent gameplay and narrative that more than makes up for it.
