Fossil Hunters

Fossil Hunters is an action-puzzle game where you explore underground levels with your trusty pickaxe at the ready to clear away sand and dirt, hopefully unearthing fossil pieces which you can then assemble into complete skeletons. By dragging the fossil pieces around and aligning them to a grid, you unlock the elevator to the next level - and any extra completed fossils mean kaching kaching for you! The game has a lighthearted adventure feel, with hidden secrets, environmental hazards, and no pressure from enemies or timers -just very cosy, satisfying exploration and the freedom to make a looooooooooooong fossil if you want to. And I did. I usually play with keyboard and mouse, and I have to honestly say that the controls are quite hard to grasp when playing that way. The game is developed with a gamepad in mind, and since you can't remap controls, the game is genuinely unplayable without a controller. X and Z aren't the best buttons to hard-map primary and secondary actions to, especially if you have to hold X and then use WASD to move around dragging items. Just wasn't for me- perhaps more fun in coop but as myself just wasn't what I as expecting. No way to have or organize inventory and a controller is a MUST.

The game is an absolute delight. It looks beautiful, the tone of its world is super charming and it's a really cosy little thing to play through, with a decent number of things to do and see. However, by far the greatest thing about the game is the building system, specifically the limitless potential it has for creation of abhorrent defilements of biology no man should have ever conceived. Genuinely it is such a blast to design freaks of nature in this game and for that alone it is a 11/10 experience. The only real problem I have with the game is that there is nothing like a dedicated creative mode. Currently I'm really wishing there was something like a special 30th level you could unlock with postgame quests or similar challenges that would just be a massive clear building area with no obstacles and a way to spawn whatever fossils you want in it. Again, this game is practically perfect for what it is, even without a dedicated sandbox, but if it had something like that I'd be returning to it on a regular basis just to make whatever. Although, I imagine with a little bit of elbow grease level 27 could be turned into a decent little sandbox. Will need to try touching it up a lit…

My roommate and I are addicted to this co-op puzzle game!

I own this on Itchio - I played it with a friend on steam's remote-play-together thing. It's sadly only local co-op (hence the remote play thing) but it's an enjoyable chill game of digging up and piecing together fossils :D
