About Captain Firebeard and the Bay of Crows

Captain Lucius “Firebeard” Cole is running down on his luck. Increased presence of both the Royal British and Spanish Navy in the Caribbean has meant slim pickings for him over the past year, and on top of that, his ship is in terrible disrepair. It seemed as though Lucius’ days of buccaneering were coming to a close until lady luck brought him a little gift to turn the tides for him; a marooned Spanish Naval officer with a terrible secret in his hands. Will Captain “Firebeard” be able to take advantage of this secret to become the greatest pirate of the seven seas or will he and his hapless crew meet an unfortunate fate? Only you can decide.

“Captain Firebeard and the Bay of Crows” is an adventure/comedy visual novel with an “arcade style” minigame that will have you holding your sides with its sharp humour and at the edge of your seat with its addictive minigame.

The art is good, the characters look really nice. The music is pleasant and passable. That's really all I can say that's positive though, sadly. Its no more than an hour's worth of reading content, with a dull and out of place minigame to pad out the play time (its pirate themed pac-man, with Firebeard collecting coins while avoiding officers and while it aesthetically makes sense, it has no connection to the story at all) between very short chapters. The voice acting was so unpleasant I turned it off before hearing more than 3 characters speak, and the option to do so is a blessing. The game ends in what I can only call the middle of the story at best, as absolutely *none* of the plot threads are resolved. Not the main set up, not the subplots, not the breadcrumbs dropped that could lead somewhere, nothing. There is no conclusion. There's build up to something but absolutely no resolution. Its like the author wrote an hour's worth and once the timer went off they hit publish right then and there and called it a day, finished or not. Also the paid DLC doesn't work, has never worked, and has still not been addressed to this day. I used a work around someone figured out in the …

I was given this game for free (Thank you) and... It's not that bad. It has really good artwork... I especially like "Marianne's" design of character and "Carlo's", mainly because he is the only other young guy I can look at. The story is about pirates. Yes, really... Didn't know it huh? You also play mini-games. Same one, different levels. Yes, there is a skip button ("X"). (If you played "Pac-Man", you will get it). It is well written, as in... I had no problems with it and understood everything. Some times it can get "technical", but then it picks up. Some parts were funny too! Set to an adventurous music! Oh and it is "kinetic" aka -> no options and you just read it, playing mini-games in between, if you feel like it. You will get around 2 hours of content. Unless you're a speed reader -> adjust accordingly. Problems? Well yes. The Captain seems like a completely useless person... I AM OKAY with stories doing that, IF they do things to redeem themselves. Unless... That is the whole joke... So then... He basically survived purely by luck. I mean it happens, but... "Marianne" and "Carlos" are the smartest people in there. "Ned" is funny. That's not a …

A visual novel with scarcely any game elements in it. You follow the story of a rather inept pirate captain and his somewhat more competent crew in a scattered attempt to reclaim their jailed shipmates and treasure. It's an uneven production at best. The referencing to locations and ship details in the story is authentic, but much of the dialogue is forgettable and Firebeard himself seems like he would have been a Darwin Award winner long before the tale ever started. The characterization between shipmates was okay at most; not particularly interesting or revelatory unless it was moving the plot forward. It's passably comedic in style, but the tone is rather flat and it's not helped by the voice work which ranges from so-so to just bad. The art, what little there is, is also just adequate. The chapters are broken up by a simplistic Pacman style game where an odd looking interpretation walks a maze to collect gold. You don't have to do these it turns out and they serve no purpose to the story. They're little else than a basic diversion to the talk heavy plot. There's just not much going on here and no chance it's worth anywhere near ten dollars. I think I got this as part of some …

Full disclosure: I got this for free - and that was way too much to pay for it. It is just a stupid text story with a very bad imitation of packman as a side game.

* A free key of this title was given to me. Even so that didn’t affected my opinion of the final product. My review: its decent for a pirate visual novel i didnt vibe with the writing for the story or the ending (especially the ending). GF's Review: Long and boring.
