About Choice of the Pirate

Plunder ghost ships for cursed treasure! Battle the Crown Navy, sea monsters, and other bloodthirsty pirates on a quest to rival the Pirate King himself!

"Choice of the Pirate" is a fast-paced swashbuckler of an interactive novel by Alana Joli Abbott, author of "Choice of Kung Fu" and "Showdown at Willow Creek." Your choices control the story. It's entirely text-based—165,000 words, without graphics or sound effects—and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.

Rise from a deck-swabbing sailor to fleet commander over five years of piracy in the tropical paradise of the Lucayan Sea. Command the winds with magic, or board enemy ships with your cutlass in your teeth.

Will you play as male, female, or nonbinary? Find romance as gay, straight, bi, or poly, or pursue friendships and alliances instead? Will you join the Crown as a privateer and bring pirates to heel? Will you parley with the Pirate King to protect the Lucayan from the navy's rule? Or will you duel the Pirate King and claim his power for yourself?

Buckle Yer Swash and Set Sail For Adventure!

  • Develop your skills as a swashbuckler, sailor, diplomat, scoundrel, or weather-mage.
  • Explore a chain of tropical islands where buried treasure and secret pirate camps are hidden.
  • Face pirate curses, haunted ships, terrifying monsters, and the wrath of the sea herself.
  • Spy for the Crown or become a double agent to support the Pirate King.
  • Become a celebrated hero or a ruthless villain.
  • Play as male, female, or nonbinary; gay, straight, bi, poly, or asexual.

✦ AI summary

Players praise this pirate choice game for its meaningful decisions, multiple endings, lack of railroading, and thoughtful character customization including gender and sexuality options, with some enjoying the blend of historical pirate references and fantasy elements like magic and sea monsters. The main criticism is that the game is quite short and rushes through its story beats, with major plot developments happening too quickly to feel impactful, though most still recommend it as a solid experience, particularly if purchased on sale.

Fun game but it is pretty short. Get it during a sale.

I like this one and have done multiple playthroughs, but am going to keep doing more to see more of the endings. I do like the multiple choices of gender and sexuality in your character, including whether you even want to have any romance involved. There's references to actual historical pirates (I love the ghost of a legendary pirate queen who guides one of the ships you can choose, she's inspired by my girl Grace O'Malley!) and there's some piratical politics going on, not just between the pirates but also in navigating relations with "civilized", law-abiding (mostly) society on land, which I like because it's historically accurate. It does do away with the expectation of historical accuracy, though, because this world involves magic, ghosts, curses, and sea monsters...which is frankly the best way to do pirates, IMO! It is strictly text-based, so if you're looking for a visual novel experience, be aware that the scenes are all painted by your imagination. A solid, enjoyable entry into the Choice Of games, which I tend to enjoy overall.

A light and somewhat enjoyable read.

THE pirates choice game. Not that long, but everything you would want or need in a pirate game. Consitend Choices, many different endings, not much railroading, stats match the choices and no forced interaction with other characters, this game has none of the classic mistakes that can ruin a choice game. If you want to play a pirate, this is your game.

This game is beyond short. Don't let my hours fool you I left it open last night but finished it in a single sitting. It is so incredibly short and seeks to cram its entire arc into a that blink of an experience. The result is everything is just thrown at you, a few minutes in you inherit a captaincy. A few minutes after getting your first ship, you've built a small fleet. Everything progresses as lighting speed and all of the major goals require no investment or effort, they just happen in your favor because there's no time for anything else. A very confused storytelling experience.

Ends too soon, but worth playing. A really engaging interactive story!
