Dream Tactics

A pretty solid GBA-era tactics game that I expected to be short and sweet, but it wasn't. Pros: + Strong fundamentals, it does everything a tactics game should. + Funny writing, I like all these characters and the pillow enemies are cute! + GBA-era pixel art that's both functional and stylish. + Great customization of characters with a variety of deckbuilding and equip options. Cons: - Too long. I expected it to be maybe 15-20 hours long, but there are a lot of unnecessary battles in here that drag the game out. That and some of the area design encourages backtracking to smash pots. Some battles just made me groan like the one where you're forced to control only pillows, or the one where you have to lead a mech onto a special tiled floor to be able to damage it. The final boss and penultimate battle also aren't great because it's just moving a carrot on a stick. - The main core 3 cast all appear in the most cutscenes and your new recruits sort of don't matter in the story aside from guiding you in new areas. - Getting items/cards in the field doesn't show a description of what it does when you acquire them. Loved the game and loved the story! If you like strategy games that reward exploration and experimentation with character builds, this game will scratch that itch. You are heavily incentivized to mix and match cards and equipment from different characters throughout the game and some items may even have you rethinking an entire character. The story is charmingly simplistic and works well with the fun and interesting environments you'll find yourself in. The humor is also well done and each character stands out in their own way. I hope the devs make other games like this in the future.

Didnt expect to enjoy this as much as I did, great little tactical rpg with some really creative & fun combos you can do with each characters card setups, an amusing story & just enough challenge to keep you on your toes. Aswell as being able to do the game in whatever order you wish. Felt like I was playing an old GBA jrpg tactics game again, very nostalgic. Last boss goes hard though, great experience

The best tactics game I have played in probably 10 years

I am a big fan of Turn Based Tactic games, and usually can find at least one thing to like in most of the games out there. There are duds out there and there are masterpieces; this falls somewhere in the middle. On the whole, this game is fun and keeps me going from one battle to another, however on that front, there are quite a lot of battles involved per map (as others have pointed out). From my seat, I would recommend this to anyone that likes Turn Based Tactic games, just expect a small slog to get to the end, but you do get to take your aggressions out on pillows!
