The discourse system is super clever and just complex enough for the short game, generating two resources to spend for movement with a rock-paper-scissors tone system driving the conversions. Using one tone requests the opponent to use an opposing tone as it damages composure to make movement easier, so early battles center around controlling a 50 power to 60 tact conversion, while unlocked skills reveal a new strategy of matching tone to outpace tact generation. If it were much longer the limitations of the Discourse system would be more troublesome. The game devolves into a lot of grinding if you're going for 100%, but the game is totally beatable with little to no extra experience. The writing is okay. Due to the setting, characters' tones come across as quite similar, especially because the more different Seymour is [spoiler] not important to the story. [/spoiler] I find the main character disagreeable, which sours quite a bit of it. The story overall struggles to manage much because the whole thing takes place in [spoiler] one evening in one room. [/spoiler] I highly recommend the game just because its combat is so unique.

I like the mystery and the way the different characters are written. The fighting system is challenging and can be quit difficult (compare to classic fighting systems with health). Pro: -unique fightsystem ( paper, scissors, rock concept + scale) -get experience by examinethe rooms + talking to people con: -a lot of level grinding at some point -grinding level experience in fight isn´t fun

I've been trying to catch up with items I had lying around my library from old bundles I bought a decade ago, and finally came across Last Word. Its unique premise caught my attention so I installed it, but I wasn't sure what to expect from the trailer and store description. To be completely honest, what definitely sold me on it was seeing it on a recent trend recommending undersold games alongside my own, and I'm really happy I gave it a go; I think this game is a stellar example of what can be made with RPG Maker. Those 6 hours simply flew by. The combat is extremely unique (and challenging if you neglect grinding a bit, but I actually like it better that way!) The characters werer all very well defined and fun to get to know, and I thoroughly enjoyed my time with them trying to get every answer before levelling up topics. Mind you, the age and the engine shows mostly in the UI -- the window size made playing really hard, and I had to squint a lot to read. I would really love any options to scale up the windows! Thank you for making such a wonderful game!

Credit where it's due, the battle system is interesting mechanically and conceptually, and the game does provide some strategic advice, ultimately the outcome is based mostly on your level relative to your opponent. In a textbook example of a excessive difficulty spike, you can't progress without beating an opponent that'll likely be about twice your level, basically forcing you into a particularly slow level grind. I also found the tone and story concept to not jell that well.
