About Voice of Cards: The Beasts of Burden

✦ AI summary

Voice of Cards: The Beasts of Burden is a card-based RPG where you pursue revenge across a world made entirely of cards, capturing defeated monsters to use as battle skills while a game master guides your journey through encounters resolved by dice rolls and meaningful choices. This unique tabletop experience from the creators behind NieR: Automata combines stunning hand-drawn art with an immersive narrative about a girl and a mysterious boy seeking redemption in an uncertain fate.

Outline

This is the tale of a girl who swears revenge on monsters.
After losing her home, she joins hands with a mysterious boy and sets out into the unknown.
But will it be the light of hope, or the darkness of despair that awaits them at journey's end..?

The Voice of Cards series are RPGs, told entirely through the medium of cards.
In this episode "The Beasts of Burden", you can trap the monsters you defeat in cards and use them as skills in battle.

Enjoy a truly unique gaming experience from the minds of YOKO TARO, Keiichi Okabe and Kimihiko Fujisaka.

Unique Features

The story in this game progresses under the guidance of a game master (the person who controls the action in a tabletop RPG).
The world this story takes place in, including all the towns, dungeons and fields, is represented entirely by cards, as the player moves avatars to go on their adventure.

The outcome of the battles and encounters at the many different places you visit, and even destiny itself, will sometimes be resolved with the roll of a die…
You can also play a new and unique card game at the Game Parlour in town.

Would you like to accompany the Game Master on a journey into the world of Voice of Cards, brought to life through beautiful art and music?

*This game is not a direct sequel to Voice of Cards: The Isle Dragon Roars or Voice of Cards: The Forsaken Maiden and can be enjoyed as a standalone adventure.
*You may find that the gamemaster occasionally stumbles, corrects themselves or needs to clear their throat, in order to give you the most immersive and true to life Tabletop RPG experience.
*Product bundles that include this game are also available. Please take care to avoid making duplicate purchases.
*Please be aware that services which require an internet connection to use may be discontinued after a time has passed from the game’s release.

✦ AI summary

Voice of Cards: The Beasts of Burden features compelling storytelling and a charming card-based presentation that most players praise, with excellent music and character writing that fans of Yoko Taro's work will appreciate. However, the gameplay is frequently criticized as repetitive and grindy, with excessive RNG in skill acquisition and a difficulty curve that stays too easy until late game, making it feel like a slog for some players.

Overall I really liked the game and mostly, but the game-play was a little on the slower side. I think it was treading on a lot of ground the NieR series has expounded upon, changing things here and there to make differences, but not really focusing in enough on them that it really feels that different. Also that we never get answers about what happened to the stars and where the aberrations come from is unfortunate. The plot beats however where great as they always are with these writers, for my personal head-canon I will just assume this one to be part of the drakenier series, just so those mysteries are solved.

Very enjoyable game with a GREAT story and characters, accompanied by fantastic music and appealing visuals for what is basically just cards on a screen. Genuinely surprised me with how much I enjoyed it, as it is unapologetically a simple game. HOWEVER, the gameplay can get fairly repetitive and for most of the game is way too easy however it picks up in the later stages. Easily a game to recommend for people wanting a more laid back experience. Yoko Taro once again proving how to make a compelling world.

The worst of the series. God this was a grind! Such a grind that I gave up probably very near the end - I just couldn't face continuing with a battle every three or four steps. And the RNG, God the RNG! Sure, I'm used to a lot of RNG, but not where actually getting your skills (and their upgrades) depends on particularly frustrating games of Find the Lady. (Except you don't get to see the Lady first!) Firstly, hope that the defeated drop some treasure (RNG), pick one of three cards, hope it's a skill or upgrade you want (RNG squared) and hope some more that you don't already have it (RNG cubed) because you only get one chance. Uninstalled.

This trilogy is such a weird entry in the larger Drakengard/NieR franchise. Treat this mini-series as if each character were a weapon story and you're the one recording them.
