About Saturnalia

✦ AI summary

Play as four interconnected characters unraveling an ancient Sardinian curse through a constantly reshaping village maze where death triggers a complete redesign and roguelite progression keeps your story momentum. Each character wields unique abilities to solve deeply narrative-woven puzzles, manage scarce resources, and uncover multiple endings across a haunting adventure inspired by stop-motion horror aesthetics.

A third-person horror adventure where you play as four characters, experiencing an intergenerational storyline tied to the haunting traditions of an ancient village in Sardinia, Italy, a region rich with unique folklore…

The village itself is an elaborate maze with no two iterations being precisely the same—you will have to explore and solve the mysteries of the game largely unguided.

Die, and watch the village reconfigure itself into a new form. Solve puzzles and open shortcuts to new areas with tools and items you find along the way, unlocking every piece of the story with different characters, each with its own power and suited for another aspect of exploration and investigation.

Game Features

  • The village structure changes each time all your characters die
  • Discover characters' special abilities, use tools and consumables to open shortcuts
  • Keep narrative and puzzle progress across game-overs (roguelite)
  • Manage your supply of matches to help your sight and solve puzzles
  • Non-linear progression, dynamic and adaptive narrative
  • Investigate the ritual at the heart of the game and use what you find to stop it
  • Puzzles deeply integrated with the game world and narrative (not abstract)
  • Artwork and animations inspired by stop-motion and rotoscoping film techniques

Info

A playthrough takes approximately 10 hours, leading to one of several potential endings.

Take this with a grain of salt, as I only have about 30-40 minutes on the game so far. I love the art style. I love the idea of the game and what they were going for. Everything changing when you lose everyone sounds like an awesome idea, even if I didn't get far enough to experience it. What I played was also decently scary as well. However, the camera is just so wonky that it makes it very difficult to enjoy, especially when the game specifically tells you to make sure you watch your back constantly. Judging by other reviews, it apparently doesn't bother people as much as it bothers me, so take that as you will, but I personally don't feel like dealing with it for 10+ hours.

A fantastic mystery that doesn't overstay its welcome. The blend of horror and investigation kept me hooked all the way through, and the overall mood and commentary more than made up for the occasional small snippets of jank. My only real complaint about the game is that the internal dialogue provided by the player characters occasionally jumps to conclusions a bit too fast for my liking, I would've liked to piece together the big picture myself rather than it immediately being brought up after finding a key clue. Still, this is a wonderful experience I can recommend to any horror sicko, oozing with passion for the team's Italian roots.

Another game I bought just to check out the NPR shaders and the art style. Visually its pretty interesting. Cross-hatching and flat overlay colors makes for a graphic design type of vibe. It is cool. I'm sure there is a solid narrative and a decent game here, but walking simulators in one-note settings makes me zone out in a hurry. So this is where I clock out on this one.

i bought it because it reminded me of siren which is one of my favorite games. i haven’t finished it yet but so far i’ve been enjoying it. the character designs are so unique and i love the atmosphere. i love paul he is so silly and sweet following me around. and there’s this sound i can’t figure out what it is but whenever the creature gets close it starts making a noise and it’s creepy. kind of sounds like his balls are hitting each other when he walks. the camera movement is a bit wonky but i guess it adds to the weirdness of the game. i also like the whispers the characters make when talking they remind me a lot of rule of rose. id recommend the game for now but if my silly paul dies i’m deleting it momo if you see this you should buy this game the religious aesthetic reminds me of you!!
