The Saint

The Saint was a curious indie horror game that provided more flaw than fun in my community's experience. The story gives too much throughout; while there are some beautiful and well thought-out set pieces, most of the story is delivered via dozens of notes redundantly hammering in a story that is clear as early as the game's initial few minutes. As its singular greatest faux pas, the finale directly explains the entire story in dialogue. There aren't puzzles, per se; at its most interactive, much like other walking sims, the game is walking back-and-forth until the next sequence triggers, or picking up a series of objects that your character sorts in the right places when you interact. Door won't open? Turn around or back up five feet. Not sure why you picked up that object? Don't worry, you'll set it down in a room or two. Most of it felt very "and then THIS HAPPENS!" until one sequence fairly late in the game that felt more coherent. The movement speed when you sprint was a pleasant surprise, but there are multiple "hallway" sections where you're forced to move slowly that would benefit from a slight speed increase. The Saint is a short but memorable psychological horror experience set in a cursed forest. From the beginning, the atmosphere pulls you in, dark, unsettling, and immersive without relying on cheap tricks. What really stood out to me was the story and its message. It touches on disturbing beliefs, how some people think they can gain power through sacrificing children—which adds a very real and uncomfortable layer to the horror. That makes the experience feel deeper than just a typical scary game. The game doesn’t rely on spammy or repetitive jumpscares, which I really appreciated. Instead, it builds tension naturally and keeps you engaged through its world and narrative. It’s not a long game, but for what it offers, it’s a solid and unique horror experience. Definitely worth playing if you enjoy psychological horror.

What a journey it's been. I enjoyed going through some game-breaking bugs and contributing to the process to get it to where it's currently at. It's a short and sweet horror game. An estimation for those that don't get stuck will get about 2 hours of some good atmosphere and on occasion really good scares. Some decisions are still really strange to me and on occasion I feel like assets are thrown together to make it serviceable, but in the end I enjoyed what I played, has a good message (that I felt can be explored a bit more), and a genuine attempt by the dev to make this work; especially with how quickly they responded with feedback. Damn that Saint guy.

Into the woods you go with this horror simulator game. Retro vibe with narrative discovery as you work your way through a cursed forest.
