Knock on the Coffin Lid

If you're willing to play only a 20-30 hours, its an OK game. I tried to play longer, and to see all of content, but that is impossible... the game became insufferably bad very quickly, for no clear reason (for multiple smaall reasons, really). For example, after you unlock all 3 heroes, each new run is very boring... The story structure of the game insists that you replay the game dozens of time with each hero, but the replayability of the gameplay is very poor. If steam had a "neutral" or "mixed" recommend, I'd give that instead of "No". But since there is no such thing, its a "No" from me. In short: The game starts strong, and is interesting for a while, but the longer you play, the worse the game becomes.

There is plenty of criticism in the reviews which is valid, but I would absolutely recommend this game for 30 or so hours. There are a lot of events and they are different depending on your character and choices which keeps things interesting for a long time, but I do find that there are certain builds or deck styles which are so clearly stronger than others.

Insane amount of replayability. Dozens of different events, that change based on hero you are playing, on events you visited before, on amount of times you visited this event. Completely different playstyle with each hero and even hero's class. Good artstyle, good gameplay, good sound, good deckbuilding roguelike, good story. Only things I do not like is final fight which forces you to pick certain path on the map to even have any chance and lack of clear understanding on how to complete some events. This one is definitely a recommend for all deckbuilding enjoyers.

I really wanted to like this game because I liked the premise behind it (getting woken up in a coffin to go adventuring). I was looking forward to playing the game as Vanadis. Bear in mind I have 1 hour and 22 minutes of playtime when writing this review, playing on "Normal" difficulty, so my experience of the game so far is fairly limited; I have not yet fought a boss battle. When in battle you MUST click the End Turn button even though you are completely out of action points and cards that could provide action points. This sums up how I feel about this game; this single example of poor design is a mirror of the entire game. Knock on the Coffin Lid feels clunky, cumbersome and outdated by at least two decades. Just because the game happens to be a 2D rogue-like isn't an excuse. I dislike the starting hero, Percival. I want to play Vanadis. It turns out that before I can play Vanadis, I have to defeat the first boss using the second hero Bjorn. I don't want to play Percival long enough to unlock Bjorn, then start the game over again and play it long enough as Bjorn to unlock Vanadis. Remarkable polished game. Have to be made by people that love games. Thumbs up from me.

If you like deck builders, highly recommended. You'll (on average) get a good 40 or so hours out of what's offered here. There is a learning curve with how the game functions, as well as certain design decisions that put off a lot of negative reviewers around the 10-40ish hour mark in regards to final bosses mechanics. Please keep that in mind when trialing the game that this is a ROGUELIKE card game. You cannot win unless you progress your knowledge with each character for their own story. With failed or completed runs, comes unlocks and knowledge for events/enemies that makes every single subsequent run much easier. There is so much content here, although it seems repetitive at first glance - the game is still throwing new mechanics at me in the 100+ hour runs I haven't seen. You'll sink MANY hours trying to unlock all the world's secrets. There is a LOT to like, however it does require you to put in the hours. One of those games were you need the wiki/journal open to progress. Everything on the visual and worldbuilding side: art, narration, music and story are wonderfully done. A+ there.
