About Starr Mazer: DSP

✦ AI summary

Blast through arcade-style shoot'em up levels with a rotating squadron of pilots, each with unique weapons and abilities, while using fallen enemies' resources to continuously recruit fresh fighters instead of losing on game over. The roguelike recruitment twist and diverse pilot roster give this Gradius-inspired shooter a fresh layer of strategy beneath its frenetic bullet-dodging action.

Starr Mazer: DSP is a side-scrolling shoot’em up in the same vein as classics like Gradius and Lords of Thunder with a roguelike twist on the traditional lives/continues system. Players take control of a squadron of DSP pilots with different ships, weapon loadouts and voices. Your mission is to battle through nine frantic arcade levels, countless waves of enemies, 3 powerful bosses, and take down the G’ell Super Ship in a single run.

The citizens of Thersa-CPIX are at war and we’re not sending one hero to the fight, we’re sending EVERYONE!

 • Levels - Battle through nine Levels, across three intense arcade-style bullet-filled acts! Take the fight from the surface of war torn Thersa-CPIX to the Space Gate and up to the heart of the G’ell Super Ship; the Adamastor!
 • Recruit - Recruit a diverse team of humans, aliens, and a dog! Hand pick your DSP team before every mission using their weapons, stats and battle order to your advantage!
 • SK:ORE - The fight never ends with SK:ORE! There are no game overs in this battle! Use your SK:ORE from fallen enemies and Carbomite pickups to purchase a new squadron of pilots!
 • Unlock Pilots - Discover legendary pilots! Give your squadron an edge in battle with unique legendary pilots like Slimo, Bunny Killmaster, Don Thacker and many more!
 • Power Up - Power up your weapons for maximum destruction! Collect Carbomite from fallen foes to power up your primary fire or to fuel your super weapon!

If you like my remarks about games, you can find more of them here: https://store.steampowered.com/curator/44130985-TDP%27s-Gaming-Escapades
Ah yes, Starr Mazer DSP. The shmup prequel to an even bigger game called Starr Mazer which was going to blend point & click and shmup genres together. The game that became famous for what happened during its development. And the game I profoundly regret buying in its early access phase. Let's start with what happened with the game, because I have more to say about that than the game itself.
The composer who took it way too far...
The situation surrounding this game is a major, massive cluster ♥♥♥♥ with a bunch of unknown/undisclosed information and speculations. I am not in a position to explain everything in detail and offer my own thoughts about them, so let me just get you up to speed on what happened. From what I know, the summary of everything is: The developer and the music composer get into a fight with each other over various topics including asset ownership. The composer tries to retaliate against the developer by any means necessary and becomes overly hostile, doin…

how is this game still unfinished after almost 10 years? Spend your money elsewhere.

It was never finished, it will likely never be finished. When I say "not finished" i mean there's only 1 level. It's basically a proof of concept demo. You can find a Kickstarter project, "Starr Mazer" (different game), also abandoned by Imagos Softworks. It's not worth it, for any price.

If you're into shmups, this game is intense, and it's pixel pretty with all kinds of detailed enemy animations and satisfying explosions. The sound effects and music amp up the experience, and it's a total good time. It just stinks that you can't suspend your game. When you're doing really good and suddenly have to quit, you're going to lose everything you'd normally be able to carry over into your next playthrough.
