Gray Dawn

Set in early 20th-century Europe, Gray Dawn follows the psychological descent of Father Abraham, a local priest accused of abducting and murdering an altar boy. As Abraham struggles to recall the events that led up to the boy's disappearance, he is forced to confront his past mistakes. Whether salvation or damnation lies at the end of this journey depends on Abraham's willingness to accept the truth. Narratively, Gray Dawn is less than inspired, featuring a story that is basically a Christian-coded Silent Hill. The game opens with the news that several children have gone missing, with Abraham directly implicated in the death of David, the altar boy. Unwilling to accept that he would ever hurt David, Abraham follows clues through his memories to try to piece together his fractured mind. The general progression follows an alternating cadence of Abraham's dreamscapes followed by a distorted version of reality. Without delving into spoilers, Abraham's character is revealed to have converted to the priesthood after a less-than-priestly past. I'm a big psychological horror kitty when it comes to games and books. I've also spent the past year learning about different religions and understanding the Bible and its messages for fun, so my review comes from that perspective! Gray Dawn is a short game, which can be a pro or a con depending on what you're looking for. For me, I wanted a short weekend game I could finish. I really liked the 1920s setting—I've always been drawn to the early 1900s as a spooky era, and since I've been listening to 1920s music lately, it felt like this game was meant for me! I also loved how the game referenced the lambs and caught on quickly to what they represented. Abraham the priest is struggling with his faith and feelings of divine abandonment while battling his guilt and inner demons. Yet, he is still trying to hold true to his faith, searching for any glimpse of hope, and determined to prove his faithfulness to God and receive His grace. That struggle comes across clearly in his journey. I found the storyline engaging and honestly enjoyed it. Was this "horror"? No, not at all. Was it spooky or scary? No. But it really gets you thinking about the deeper meaning behind the message…

Very enjoyable game

To firstly address my playtime of this game, I have only played under 15 minutes total and my experience has been very convoluted and has left my mind in weary state unsure of how to continue playing this game as a faithful Christian. I understand why the game was made, to give people a semi-psycho-horror-puzzle experience with an interesting story background and interesting protagonist. During the first time I went through the door and ended up in some sort of magic world that apparently was created by God, I was a little confused at what to do, but It's a puzzle game so I understand that some things will be intentionally left out for players to figure out. From a Christian perspective: - Priestly rank/status is no where to be described about the protagonist. - Denominational status is no where described as well. -- The protagonist is titled a Priest with no affirmative denominational status. The office in the introduction to the game has a Coptic Orthodox Crucifix on the wall, in which Father Abraham prays unto when fighting the voice in the radio and fighting temptation.
