About False Skies

✦ AI summary

False Skies is a classic turn-based RPG where you build a custom party from eight distinct classes and layer new classes onto them as you progress, keeping all previous skills and stats while discovering hidden class data throughout the world. Explore over a dozen dungeons filled with 300+ enemy types and engage in fast-paced tactical battles where smart skill selection and enemy positioning are critical, with zero equipment restrictions letting you experiment freely.

It has been 2000 years since the stars fell from the night sky.
To see them in this place... what does this mean for us?

_____________

The throne room of a long-forgotten ruin lies ransacked. Communication is lost, monsters run rampant across the land, and ships that leave the safety of the shore are quickly sunk. And among all this, rumors of a group of strange horned people, hailing from a city that vanished millennia ago, are quickly spreading...

_____________

False Skies is a classic RPG with fast-paced, turn-based battles and an involved class system.

Features:

  • Create a party with any combination of 8 distinct classes.
  • ...and, when the time comes, layer on new classes! Each of the four tiers has its own set of 8 classes to choose from, with no restrictions on what classes can be chosen.
  • No equipment restrictions! Go put that sword on your mage - but be aware that it might not be the best idea to do so.
  • Explore well over a dozen dungeons, encounter over 300 types of enemies, and associate with a varied cast of characters as you travel the world.
  • Enjoy many quality of life features, such as reduced penalties for falling in battle and obsolete skills being replaced.

The Battle System

False Skies employs a simple, traditional, and fast battle system. With clever and effective skill selection, your foes shall fall fast - but you'll sustain heavy damage in return if you're not careful, especially if you hit with attacks that are readily countered by whatever you're facing.

The Class System

At certain points throughout your journey, you'll get the chance for your party members to change class. Each class comes with its own unique traits, whether it be what skills they learn, how strong their stat growths are, or equipment they can use effectively. Furthermore, each new class layers onto your older ones, with your party members keeping all their old skills and stats intact.

While a few classes will be available for you to change into immediately, data on most of them are scattered around the world. Go off the beaten path, and you shall be rewarded...

✦ AI summary

False Skies is a turn-based JRPG that captures classic NES-era sensibilities with excellent class system design, engaging turn-based combat, and strong nostalgic appeal to fans of Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy Adventure. Players consistently praise the diverse class combinations, satisfying exploration and combat mechanics, and the polished aesthetic and writing, with several enthusiasts expressing they would happily purchase it at full price. The game appears to be a solid recommendation for JRPG fans seeking a well-crafted retro experience.

This is a great game. There is a lot of contents and the game can be quite long (prob about 2x-3x length of the typical final fantasy game). Dungeons are also very well made, they feature optional bosses, optional areas filled with lore, high end items, and stuff they you need to come back later for access. I find the class system to be overly complex, and there are lots of things that could go wrong. Basically you have multiple tiers of classes, each tiers feature 5-8 classes that you could mix and match. They include everything such as straight up damage dealer, debuffer to the weird ones such as pokemon-like summoners, turn controllers (a very unique adaptation of the classical time mage), etc. This class upgrade is also optional, so technically you could have 3 classes on a same character, or 2, or 5, etc up to you. This leads to the biggest issue with the class system, which is the description the game provides for each class is very barebone, and there aren't much ways for you to "reset" your character stats or classes. So choices made for your characters are permanent. This means you could lose out some classes or skills that could make a world difference for your pl…

A damn good JRPG game made by someone who clearly understands the appeal of these types of games by the people who played them growing up. My only regret is I only discovered this during the current summer sale on a random post mentioning it and didn't pay full price for it, because this kind of thing is clearly made for me. I wish I knew about it when it first came out. I will buy something like this day 1 at full price every time if I know it exists. Please make another game.

Wow. I like to think I keep my finger on the pulse when it comes to gaming but I somehow missed this one at release - definition of a hidden gem. Highly recommend.

Came for the story and the gameplay. Stayed for the extensive Job (and subsequent character creation system). I enjoyed that the story began with your party as a group of archaeologists investigating ruins, only to be ambushed and having to fight monsters on their way out, then people in subsequent towns question your story when you're walking around fully equipped in armor and weapons lol

Wow, I can't believe that I had to stumble upon this game - this is exactly what I'm looking for, with the awesome nostalgia spikes from the font and character models, to the incredible diversity of classes/jobs, to the story that's serving a little bit of Final Fantasy Adventure series. Definitely worth the (not very expensive) cost!!!!

An absolutely fantastic turn-based RPG which plays like a mixture of Dragon Quest and Etrian Odyssey. False Skies relies purely on the design of its enemies, encounters, weapons, and player classes to make battles interesting, and succeeds wonderfully at doing so. The class system is my personal favorite iteration of such in any game I've played, allowing a huge amount of flexibility without offering so much freedom that every party member ends up feeling the same. Each character can only have one class from each tier, and only from either tiers 1-4 or 2-5, but you can enter any class in the next tier from any class in your current tier. Your characters will have specific roles in your party, but with well over 8000 possible combinations of classes [strike]I'm pretty sure that's how the math works out[/strike], you can make those roles be exactly what you're looking for, whatever that may be. Even if you don't know with certainty what various skills will do before you choose a class, the more standard skills follow a standardized naming scheme, and you can learn what an amount of the other skills do by paying attention to enemies or reading through bestiary entries. For the most un…
