Despite a few memorable moments, Awe of Despair remains an incomplete game. This game manages to summon a creepy atmosphere at times, but unfortunately a lack of focus and poor technical performance dispel any chance at atmospheric horror. It can also be enjoyable during certain FPS segments, but ultimately multiple enemy glitches render the action horror to be tedious and boring. I saw a glimmer of potential in Awe of Despair, but unless it undergoes serious patchwork, I cannot recommend it. Given that the last update was on January of 2018, I think that Awe of Despair will remain an unpolished, bug-ridden 3D survival horror. There is no writing done for this game beyond the fact that you play a man haunted by the stigma of the number 13. The game also lacks focus. It will try to summon a creepy atmosphere by featuring a dark hallway, a shimmering lamp, the tension of a monster lurking nearby - but then, it will have no score. However, most of the time, a general gameplay scene will include a generic hallways with poor lighting and pitch black monsters. Here, monsters will glitch through doors and will be able to hit and kill you through closed doors. Another enemy glitc…22 found this helpful
I cant recomend this game more for its price, it is truely amazing indie game. Thrill Seekers its very intense, and I find that there is so much depth in the more than generic scare and atmosphere. I haven't had a feeling of I dont want to try to progress since I played Amnesia the first time. I really don't want to even try to beat the next part because I have no clue what can pop out at me next. I was also fortunate enough to test and see this game as it was progressing, the creator is a singular dude and he had some testers, and every single test or version something changed you wouldn't expect like he was trying to mess with the testers themself, Pro's -Atmosphere is 10/10 I love the feel of the game -Scare factor is definatly there, it is great aspect of the game that you can't just survive through everything, and sometimes are forced to die (Think Silent Hill two for PS1 when it started how you didnt know you had no choice but to die) -Graphics are pretty good, and detailed. Con's -Its very dark, and for the first part of the game you have to choose between being able to see or being able to shoot till you get duct tape. It also could be considered a pro because it adds to…12 found this helpful
Awe of Despair is currently the sole release from new indie developer/publisher, Reliant. The game can be classified as a light survival horror snack, with sprinkles of psychological horror elements throughout. Players wake up in a small apartment, and with no story or instructions to go on they must find their way through three levels; the apartment complex, the morgue, and the basement. The scares and monster spawns in Awe of Despair seem to be randomly generated, as each time the player dies and wakes up at the nearest spawn point the enemies seem to change. It's very difficult to discern exactly what needs to be done in order to trigger any sort of progression, and it easily creates confusing gameplay that ultimately leads to a lot of unnecessary frustration. In the elevator, located on the apartment level, I became stuck despite having input the correct code. It was only after restarting the game that I was finally able to move forward to the next level; the morgue. The second level also held problems for me, with a monster that killed me despite having loaded about 20 bullets into him. The game also makes you choose between having a weapon out, or your flashlight out. This …9 found this helpful
