Acolyte

If there was ever a game that I could give a 'mixed' recommendation, it would have to be this one. TL;DR this game has some fantastic ideas and good writing, especially for ARG lovers, but flaws in the game - some of them out of the developer's control - lead to frustrating problems. The main draw to Acolyte is getting to interact with the Acolyte, Ana, whom is - functionally - an older-style chatbot. Sadly, I found this limited the interactions I could have - perhaps I've been spoiled by AI since (Who could have foretold that just five months after this game would be the launch of ChatGPT?), but I found that trying to talk naturally to Ana could lead to bugs in the game. While most of the time this ends up in just your message not being understood (common amongst the older-style chatbots, as was the style at the time), this can lead to more serious bugs sometimes - I had one that essentially soft-locked the game and forced me to reset my progress. But when Ana did talk back to me as expected, I got a strong sense of her personality and felt she was well-written and interested in your success! encountered a game breaking bug pretty early on

This is one of those games that does a fantastic job in making you feel very smart. Enjoyed solving the puzzle and talking to my ANA!

the game has a lot of actual glitches that I discovered. I had to delete my progress in order to jailbreak it properly. on my second run, I found out that the responses are limited, and it's d run, I found out that the responses are limited, and it's not actually an ai it's more of a visual novel. on my third time deleting my progress ( the program forgot it was jailbroken.) she skipped my personality test which made the whole thing get stuck in a loop. if you get everything correct During the first run, it can be so exciting. but not for me

I like the game in concept more than in practice. It started out with basic questions confusing Ana. Simple straight forward commands were met with "I don't know what you are saying". For a supposedly advanced technology, it didn't seem to work well and how to progress through dialogue was confusing at best. Then it came to the ARG bits. I wasn't aware of this aspect of the game before buying it. And, it seems that since the game's release, several of those bits are outdated and unusable (or at least hard to access).

A well-done, concise puzzle game. Some of the tricks can be difficult to figure out if you're not used to cyphers, codes, and ARGs, but its a fun story to play through!
