AI: The Somnium Files

Fun game if you like the genre of visual novels and murder mysteries. Not a ton of game play so very laid back and chill but characters and story are fun and engaging.

Absolutely phenomenal game. I am *very* picky with the supernatural in my murder mystery games- games that do it poorly, in my opinion are Kathy Rain and Paranormasight. Games that do it well, are Ace Attorney and the Tangle Tower series (especially their latest game- GO PLAY MERMAID MASK, BUT BEFORE YOU DO-) Somnium Files has the tightest writing for any murder mystery game I've ever played. The characters are fun, charming- well, mostly, looking at you Ota- and I will not spoil it, but the way the game brings the more paranoramal aspects of its universe to you- the logic is solid, and therefore you aren't mad at any of the reveals- I cannot say more, you must play this game blind, it is worth enduring the really cringe pervert humor here and there. Truly, porno mags are the worst character in the series, but I still highly recommend picking it up. The sequel is also a good time but the twist just pissed me off. Writing is not nearly as tight.

The story is weird, funny, creepy and surprisingly emotional all at the same time. The characters are great, and the mystery kept me guessing right up until the end. Every time I thought I had figured something out, the game managed to throw another twist at me. The Somnium sections are probably my favorite part. Exploring people's dreams is such a strange concept, but it works really well and gives the game its own identity. The humor is also way better than I expected. Some of the jokes are completely ridiculous, but somehow they fit perfectly with the characters. The only downside is that the pacing can be a little slow in places, and some of the dream puzzles can get confusing. Still, if you like mystery games with great characters and completely unhinged stories, definitely give this a try. 7/10 — Came for the murder mystery, stayed for the talking eyeball.

Very funny character interactions, clever branching story + goated ost

Liked the story. It was very non-linear, and the branching storylines serve to build the grand narrative pretty well. What I did not like were the "puzzles," which ultimately were trial-and-error. Since the Somniums are illogical, there isn't any way to get the answers correctly in one go. Also, some of the flavor text are a waste of time. You click on a "Sofa," and Date just says "A sofa."
