Basically what if Contra had difficulty all over the place with H-scenes that didn't really line up to what was going on. I tried but as soon as I got to a level where enemies were just dropping on top of me with no real clue where to stand I gave up.

I typically like the games from this studio, but not this one. Very unforgiving, challenging without the fun of a challenge. If Contra tried to be sexy, but less fun. If you do play, make sure you change the controls before starting. I didn't and it took me wayyyy too long of mashing every button on the keyboard to figure out how to even shoot.

nightmarish difficulty

A key thing to remember is Difficult does NOT = fun. This game is unforgiving from the very start, spawning you into infinite death loops. There is no "getting good" There is only death. No health bars, hard to see enemy bullets, no difficulty settings. I could forgive it if it at least had an infinite life (story) mode.
