Birth ME Code

(Post 100% completion, no spoilers review) This is one of the best death games I've played. It has great atmosphere, characters, themes, story, music, mechanics. I also love the masked character designs, and ME's design Once I started reading, I pretty much was only thinking about completing it. I felt really immersed I have only a few grievances: - The ending feels somewhat disconnected from the story leading up to it (though I still found it very interesting) - The flowchart can be difficult to navigate (but satisfying once you figure it out) I really love this game. Wow! I REALLY enjoyed this one. Everything is a step up from the previous game. Art is better. Music is great. Story is complex, philosophical and very engaging. Gameplay was... added! My main criticism would just be how obtuse some of the puzzles are, the hints barely helped on a fair few of them. The 'Trust' system could have been better explained early on as well. Looking forward to starting the 3rd game!

I enjoyed Head AS Code, the prequel game, enough that I immediately hopped over to this game. Head AS Code was plagued with grammatical errors, but it wasn't egregious enough to impact the experience for me. Birth ME Code is another story. The strange grammar and tense switches creates major problems in narrative given all the actual rules to follow and the logical deductions the player has to make. With the imprecise nature of the wording, the effect is far more aggravating than the prequel. Just some quick examples: "And also, you haven't been exploring with the others earlier." "You can't see it just yet, but the cylinder in the middle will be gone… In front of you, once your vision will have come back, will be a shotgun." "Hopefully you didn't kill off your best puzzle solver yet, or else you would regret it now." In a game like this, the explanation of the rules and any infodumps must be tight and concise. The author seems to be someone who learned English as a second language, and unfortunately this writing style really impedes on the player's understanding of the entire story. Cool mystery/escape room game!

A nice little game to scratch that Uchikoshi itch. Fans of the Zero Escape games and more recent AI: The Somnium Files are gonna enjoy this game, as well as its prequel, Head AS Code. It's a step down in writing quality though, so temper your expectations. My favorite mechanic is definitely its streamlined timeline flowchart. To play a new route, not only can you pick the fork to the new branch you wanna continue, but also the relevant choices from previous nodes that can unlock the branch.
