Fantastic if flawed game. There's a lot of good assets that aren't given a chance to shine due to some bad design decisions and unrefined mechanics but I still really enjoyed the game anyway.

The concept at its core is decent - playing as a toy-like character, battling against a variety of enemies that are toy-based which present lots of different fighting styles, needing to light up areas to make your progression easier, it's a sound idea. However, it unfortunately has many major drawbacks - the procedural generation has been poorly implemented, very often creating utterly impassable areas, which on face value might just sound like typical roguelike design, but it becomes a major problem when there are time trials, or otherwise the only way to progress is to get through said impassable areas. The quests are tedious, being needlessly specific to the point of being almost impossible to complete, or if they're ones that involve finding someone, you have to be ridiculously lucky to find their location and complete whatever task they've given you for them to go back to base. The resource gathering is a chore, with no fair indication of where to get some of the high-end upgrades. Any time you close the game all your map progression is reset as though you'd died, even if you'd closed after getting back to base. Some of the enemies are just cheap, and only reasonably counte…

I did not enjoy the time I spent playing this game. Other negative reviews expand on the specifics so I won't repeat them here and will just say that I do not recommend this game.

The uninspired procedural generation leads to repetitive levels and frustrating difficulty spikes that make the gameplay more exhausting than enjoyable.

Toy Odyssey has an interesting premise. Unfortunately, this potential has not been realized by the developers. While the graphics and the audio are decent, every other aspect of the game needs improvement. The story is depressing and ultimately ruined by bad writing. Platforming is some of the worst I have ever played, often making it impossible to tell what is a platform and what isn't. Most enemies are annoying in their refusal to telegraph attacks and constant desire to jump on top of the player. And the game likes to spawn the player surrounded by a dozen enemies, making for some cheap deaths. As a result, what could have been a fun little roguelike, is a largely irritating grind that has the player dying over and over while slowly upgrading the character and the base over time, while penalizing casual players by burning a night every time you restart the game.

Not really a roguelike, but death has consequences although your characters lvl progress does not reset. It's good fun!
