What Steam players say
Recent verbatim reviews from Steam — separate from playze.io community reviews below.
Players praise the game's atmospheric sound design and graphics that effectively support its dark horror aesthetic, along with the exploration-focused gameplay of searching buildings and collecting items. However, they widely criticize the repetitive and monotonous gameplay loop of walking and searching with little variety, a sparse map lacking meaningful content, virtually no puzzles, confusing navigation that leads to aimless wandering, slow character movement, and the lack of settings options to adjust audio levels. Most feel the game lacks genuine scares and story depth, with many consider

P. S. If you have difficulties in the walktrough, this guide will be very useful: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3561496240
BORING BEHIND
“Darkness Ahead”, even after updating to version 2.0, is still a clear example of how a horror game can completely miss the mark. Despite improved sound and visuals (compared to the eye-wincing first versions), Useless Machines' project never manages to go beyond a boring and totally unfunny wandering-and-searching game. Fear? Totally missing. Gameplay is basically just finding items and completing simple quest tasks: find the key, chop the boards with an axe, activate the book, look for white symbols. All of this is made worse by the painfully slow movement of the main character, turning what should be a 30-minute playthrough (if you know exactly where to go) into a grueling hour-and-a-half ordeal if you get even slightly lost in the cluttered and, most importantly, EMPTY areas. The game frustrates with dumb restrictions and a complete lack of smooth transitions from task to task. The story is insanely clichéd: the younger brother goes missing after heading into the forest with his friends. Sudden…4 found this helpful
It’s a nice game, but there’s no option to lower the volume. That sucks, because I’m not really into horror games and I get scared 😅2 found this helpful
Darkness Ahead is a compact, atmosphere-driven horror experience that leans heavily on isolation, tension, and a sense of creeping dread rather than elaborate storytelling or complex mechanics. Developed by Useless Machines and published by SA Industry, the game follows a man searching for his missing younger brother, a disappearance that leads him to a remote mountain plateau dotted with abandoned facilities, decaying buildings, and ominous clues. From the outset, the game makes its intentions clear: this is a story about wandering into a place where something has gone deeply wrong, and uncovering that truth becomes both your motivation and your curse. The landscape is bleak and desolate, and the game uses its setting not as a backdrop but as the central force shaping your experience. The gameplay revolves around slow, deliberate exploration and puzzle-driven progression. Instead of combat or survival mechanics built around fighting monsters, the tension emerges from uncovering scraps of information, gathering tools, and navigating dark, confined spaces where danger feels implicit even when nothing is visibly threatening you. Your flashlight becomes your lifeline; its limited bat…1 found this helpful
