Quarterstaff

This game seems super fun! Looking forward to digging into it more thoroughly.

This game is a genuine delight. As someone who shies from similar titles because I find turn-based strategy both confusing and exhausting, Quarterstaff has made it so much easier to parse, process, and just enjoy the combat outright. Additionally, the combat system is so much more robust than I could have hoped for. There are a lot of little details that make this game shine. The sound cues, the witty writing, the very enjoyable ease of access to elements that are usually overlooked. All around awesome and I'm looking forward to sitting down for a nice long session very soon.

An extremely calculated game. Good mechanics which turn every combat into a highly engaging puzzle which only fully rewards you if you maximize the appropriate subset of tools you optimize for that given fight.

Stick to the demo, the puzzles just get more obnoxious the longer it goes. Gave up on the Gelatinous Cube; I don't find it particularly fun to throw nine moving enemies into nine particular spots on a moving cube.

Easy to learn, difficult to master. The complete quote is “All the best games are easy to learn and difficult to master. They should reward the first quarter and the hundredth.” This quote is attributed to Bushnell’s Law, named after Nolan Bushnell, the founder of Atari. Bushnell was speaking of game design an emphasis on coin-op (arcade), but it can be applied to modern games. The basic idea is that a game should have an easy entry point and remain enjoyable throughout, while also providing a challenge if one chooses that route. Developed by Generic Lake Monster, LLC, Quarterstaff is a turn-based action strategy game. “Control the powerful and mysterious wizard Kalresh as you fight to liberate the realm from an ambitious and ruthless tyrant, using a myriad of graceful acrobatics and powerful spells to endure and defeat waves of opponents (Steam)!” Essentially, you are looking at a game of Checkers AND Chess on a massive board. You can choose to play Checkers and just overtake the enemy, or play Chess and utilize everything the game has to offer. By the way, Chess is the perfect analogy for Bushnell’s Law. Absolutely love Quarterstaff. This is one of those rare games that respects players of all motor control levels without ever feeling watered down or patronizing. The controls are intuitive, forgiving where they need to be, and thoughtfully designed so that you can focus on decision-making rather than fighting the input system. If you have limited motor control, slower reaction times, or just prefer a more deliberate pace, Quarterstaff genuinely feels welcoming. Mistakes feel recoverable, and success feels earned rather than gated behind twitch reflexes. At the same time—and this is the impressive part—the game still delivers a real, satisfying challenge. Mastery comes from understanding timing, positioning, and strategy, not raw speed. As you improve, the depth becomes clearer, and the difficulty scales in a way that keeps things engaging without ever crossing into frustration. It’s challenging, fair, accessible, and deeply satisfying. Quarterstaff proves that accessibility and difficulty are not opposites—they’re complementary when done right. Highly recommended to anyone who wants a game that meets you where you are and still pushes you to grow.
