Blades of the Righteous

Blades of the Righteous is an interesting strategy game that combines resource management with turn-based combat. It seems to be a labour of love, with lots of little details and an unusual map/quest system. Sadly, i can't recommend it. Combat is clumsy. Your units are placed randomly at the start, unit order isn't shown and the game doesn't automatically skip a fase if you have no abilities available. The game has a ton of options but gives too little guidance as to what 'works' so it's easy to shoot yourself in the foot. The resting element seems like a waste of time but is actually a vital element. It would probably have been better if units simply healed automatically after every battle. While it is listed as a casual game, it's pretty hard even at Easy difficulty unless you know what you're doing. The city UI is a kinda clumsy with your character walking around in it. A single (non-scrolling) visual representation would've sufficed.

Really fun game! I like the time management, do you rest/send some peasants on a quest/wipe some invaders? Ressource management is fun too (different resources are used to enhance the kingdom/recruit new units/teach them more skills...) The turn based combat is playing out fine and each class (three at the start with more to unlock) really has its weaknesses/strong points. I really don't get the negative reviews for such a low price (under 1€/1.20$ during sale). Again, don't expect to spend 60+ hours with Blades of the Righteous, but i bet i'll spend a few/some fun hours and looking forward to finishing the game at least once on Normal difficulty after an "Easy" run.

First, please see my hours played and, if you like, achievements for this game. Unlike most reviewers, I have actually played it long enough to figure it out. This is a small, relatively simple (but still surprisingly deep) turn-based hex-grid strategy game with somewhat generic characters, simple graphics, and simple animations. It'll likely run on half of a potato. It's also $3 USD. It's not hard, but it's not too easy, and you definitely need to invest the time to learn the game's quirks before you're going to "get it," as evidenced by many of the other reviews. It has some bugs. The Grim Reaper will crash the game, as will hovering over skills for angels. As long as you leave those two units out of the mix, which is easily done, the game is completely stable. Considering this under $5 game is nearly four years, its time may have come and gone, but who knows, the developer might come back and patch it up for those two units. More than likely, they worked fine four years ago, but since the forum community here on Steam went completely dead back in 2016, I can understand why the developer might just decide not to mess with it. I really wish there was a maybe button... I've had this in my wish list for 2 years now, and nothing has happened.. It doesn't even have enough reviews now to grade it. Anyhow, it was on sale for about 2 dollars, and if you see this on sale for again for that much MAYBE pick it up, but it is clearly not finished... From the story to the UI, this looks like class project at Digipen or whatever. It certainly doesn't have an intuitive UI, nor a workable story other than: "Thems bad guys, kill bad guys cause you good guys." I only put around 20 - 30 minutes and had enough. Though this might be outstanding an hour into it, that doesn't mean crap unless you feel invested enough to put in that time.... I don't even know why I'm writing this review, such as breathing or other bodily functions. Adieu
